Nonchaloir (Repose) - 1911

A haunting painting of Sargent's niece Rose-Marie, the artist's favourite model. It glorifies "dolce far niente" - the pleasure of doing nothing - in its depiction of carefree idleness. A vibrant palette balances the peaceful subject. It is a persistent delicious work as restful for the viewer as the image it depicts.
