(EVA-02's eyes light and it activates, breaking free from the cage)

(Command Center - warning indicators light and alarms sound)

Makoto:
EVA-02 has activated!

Misato:
What!?  Asuka...?

(Monitor shows Asuka in sickroom)

Shigeru:
Confirmed in hospital room 303.

Misato:
Then who is...?

Maya:
It's unmanned!  An entry plug is not inserted!

Misato:
Unmanned?  It isn't the Fifth Child?

(Monitor display: A.T. Field generating)

Makoto:
A.T. Field generation detected in Central Dogma!

Misato:
EVA-02!?

(Monitor display: 17th Angel - Identified)

Makoto:
No, pattern Blue!  Unmistakably an Angel!

Misato:
What!?

(EVA-02 and Kaworu descend down the Central Dogma shaft)

(Control Center)

Misato (in disbelief):
An Angel!?  That boy?

Operator:
Target passing Level 4... and still descending.

Shigeru:
No good!  We can't cut off the power to the linear elevator!

Operator:
Target passing Level 5.

Fuyutsuki:
Close all bulkheads throughout Central Dogma!  Do anything possible to gain time!

(Shots of bulkheads closing)

Announcement:
(??) All personnel - evacuate. All personnel - evacuate.

Fuyutsuki (to Gendo):
Who would have thought that SEELE would send one directly to us.

Gendo:
The old men are trying to advance their schedule - by our hands.

(SEELE monoliths)

SEELE:
People forget their foolishness and repeat the same mistakes.

SEELE:
People will not change if they perform their own atonement.

SEELE:
We will not rely on Adam or the Angels...

Kihil:
We must advance into the future by our own means.  EVA-01 - fulfill your duty.

(Command Center)

Shigeru:
EVA-02 has broken through the armored bulkheads!

Makoto:
Target passing the No. 2 Cocytus!

Gendo:
Have EVA-01 pursue!

Misato:
Affirmative!

Gendo:
Use any and all means to prevent the target from entering Terminal Dogma!

(EVA-02 and Kaworu still descending)

Misato (wondering):
But, why would an Angel use EVA-02?

Fuyutsuki (to Gendo):
Does it plan to join with EVA-02?

Gendo:
Or to use it to bring about destruction.

(Shinji inside EVA-01 entry plug)

Shinji:
No!  NO!  NO!!  Kaworu?  an Angel?  It must be a LIE!!

Misato (on radio):
It's true - accept it.  Now deploy, okay?

(Kaworu still descending - looking upward)

Kaworu:
What's keeping you, Shinji?

(EVA-01 descending through Central Dogma shaft)

Operator:  EVA-01, descending via No. 2 route in pursuit of target.

(Inside entry plug)

Shinji (angrily):
You betrayed me!
You betrayed my feelings!
You betrayed me just like my father!!

(Command Center)

Shigeru:
EVA-01 has reached Level 4 and is approaching target!

(Central Dogma shaft)

Shinji:
There!

(EVA-02 and Kaworu look upward to see EVA-01)

Kaworu:
I've been waiting for you, Shinji.

Shinji:
Kaworu!!

(the EVA units lock grips)

Shinji:
Sorry, Asuka!

(EVA-01 and 02 draw their prog knives - Kaworu looks on coldly/sadly)

Kaworu:
The Eva series, born of Adam, and a loathsome existence to humans.
Why the Lilim would use 'that' in order to survive - I can't understand.

(EVA-02 lunges at EVA-01's head, but EVA-01 parries the blow with its prog knife - Sparks fly from the contacting blades)

Shinji:
Kaworu - STOP!  Why are you doing this!?

Kaworu:
Eva and I have the same body - For I am also born of Adam.
I would be able to join with EVA-02, if I did not have a soul. (vague)
Because the soul of this unit has shut itself away.
(Deflected, EVA-01's prog knife thrusts toward Kaworu - but is stopped by an A.T. Field)

Shinji:
An A.T. Field!

Kaworu:
Yes.  That is what you Lilim call it.
A sacred province inviolate to anyone - the light of soul.
You Lilim are aware of that, aren't you?
That the A.T. Field is the barrier of heart that everyone has.

Shinji:
I don't understand!  Kaworu!

(EVA-02 thrusts it's prog knife into EVA-01's left chest - Shinji screams in pain and plunges EVA-01's prog knife into EVA-02's neck)

(Command Center)

Operator:
Both Eva units have reached the bottom level.

Operator:
20 seconds before target reaches Terminal Dogma.

Misato (to Makoto):
If EVA-01's signal disappears, and another change occurs in the A.T. Field...

Makoto:
I understand... Self-destruct the entire place, right? It's better than letting Third Impact occur.

Misato:
I'm sorry.

Makoto:
It's all right - as long as I can die with you...

Misato:
Thanks.

(EVA units locked in death struggle)

Kaworu (sadly):
Is this people's fate?  People's hopes are bound with sadness. (Closes eyes)

(Command Center shakes violently)

Misato:
What's happening?

Makoto:
An A.T. Field!  -The strongest yet detected!

(Displays: A.T. Field generation and monitoring LOST)

Shigeru:
All light waves, electromagnetic waves and even particles have been shut out.  We can't monitor anything!

Misato:
A complete barrier!

Maya:
Target, EVA-01 and EVA-02, all lost!  Contact with pilot impossible!

(EVA units fall from hole in red ceiling into lake with salt pillars)

Shinji:
Kaworu!

(Kaworu looks back sadly over shoulder, then proceeds onward)

Shinji:
Wait!

(EVA-02 clutches at EVA-01's ankle... Kaworu unlocks "Heaven's Door")

(Command Center)

Shigeru:
Final safety system released!

Makoto:
Heaven's Door is opening!

Misato:
So an Angel finally reached Adam...
Hyuga...

(Makoto nods silently)

(EVA units square off against each other - surroundings shake violently again)

Shinji:
What!

(Command Center - Monitors: A.T. Field generation detected - Analyzing)

Misato:
Status?

Makoto:
It's an A.T. Field!

Shigeru:
Another A.T. Field, similar to the first, has been generated near the barrier around Terminal Dogma!

Maya:
It's entering the barrier!

Misato:
Not - a new Angel!?

Shigeru:
Negative!  Unable to confirm!

(Monitors go blank)

W - What!?  It's vanished!

Misato:
Vanished?  An Angel?

(Rei appears, standing on a ledge in Terminal Dogma)

(Kaworu, floating before Lilith)

Kaworu:
Adam, progenitor (Literally: "mother") ours.  Must those born from Adam return to Adam, even at the annihilation of humanity?
(Eyes narrow)
No!  This is... Lilith!?  I see... I understand now, Lilim.
 

(The nuclear self-destruct unit and deactivated EVA-02 crash into the chamber, followed by EVA-01, which grasps Kaworu with its right hand)

Kaworu (smiling):
Thank you, Shinji.
I hoped you would stop EVA-02.  Otherwise, I might have gone on living with her.

Shinji:
 Kaworu... why?

Kaworu:
It is my destiny to go on living, even if that means the end of humanity.
But I can also die here - Life and death are of equal value to me.
My own death - that is my only absolute liberty.

Shinji:
What!?  Kaworu?  I don't understand what you're saying! Kaworu...

Kaworu:
My final testament.
Now, erase me - Or you will all be erased.
Only one form of life can escape the time of annihilation - and obtain a future.
And, you are the one who should not die.

(Kaworu looks upward and smiles at Rei, who looks on coldly. Kaworu smiles)

All of you need a future.

(EVA-01's hand tenses slightly)

Thank you. I am happy to have met you.

(Prolonged stillness. Then...)
