In an ancient world parallel to our own, it is an age of knights, warriors, and rivers soaked with blood. Kings rule with an iron fist as slaves drudgingly cater to their every desire.

Andragoras, the king of the lavish empire, Palse, is planning out the next battle with their dreaded enemies, the Lusitanians. The two empires wage in a mere holy war in which only the followers of the "true" God shall survive.

Andragoras' son, Arislan, looks upon the battlefield with awe and fear. The mist that surrounds them is foreboding and strange. Something does not seem right about it.

Meanwhile, Daryoon, one of Andragoras' generals, has suggested to the king that they retreat. The mist is just too thick to wage a battle. Through the cajoling of Kharlan, Daryoon's rival, the plan of retreat is not met well with the other generals. Andragoras does not like Daryoon's cowardice and makes it public that he be stripped of his title as General. His uncle, Vaphreze, who is Andragoras' greatest general, sets Daryoon upon the task of protecting Andragoras' only son, Prince Arislan.

Treachery strikes! As soon as the Palsian army wages their furious battle, they realize that the ground is covered with oil just as the Lusitanians rush at them with blazing torches! When it is clear that Palse will lose this battle, and eventually will lose the war, it is revealed that Kharlan was behind the treachery!

When it seems that the battle is over, Arislan is alone, amidst an empty stretch of corpses. Two Lusitanian soldiers find him and attack just as Daryoon arrives, saving the boy from certain death. They both leave the battlefield in search of the tools needed to rebuild their beloved kingdom.

This is "The Heroic Legend of Arislan" or "Arislan Senki" (its Japanese name). The above description gives a summary of the first 5 minutes of the first OVA. The series is released by U.S. Manga Corps in conjunction with Central Park Media. Since this is one of my favorite anime of all time, I sincerely urge you to watch it.
