1st BATTALION,
GLOUCESTERSHIRE REGIMENT
The British Expeditionary Force which went to France in 1914 was small compared to the French and German Armies, but in quality was superb. The spirit of the men, their fighting ability and marksmanship made it an incomparable little army. Their gallantry and self-sacrifice gave Britain time to muster and train her new armies, but the cost in the flower of Britain's manhood was tragic.
The 1st Glosters went into
action on 26th August 1914 at Landrecies. By November 1918 it had
won 31 Battle Honours, but at a cost of 62 Officers and 1044 men
dead, and many more wounded.
