Acer fabri is an
ultra-rare species maple for at least two reasons. Reason
one is that it is only hardy in USDA zones 7-8 and up.
That rules out two-thirds of the major and famous
arboreta of the world. Zones 9-10 have so many other tree
choices they are less likely to even consider it. Thus it
will be a niche tree in the US at least. Reason two is that hardly anyone grows or sells it.Forest Farm serves most of the US demand we believe and have been good for 5 gallon plants since 2001. This Chinese species is so curious and interesting one might be inclined to think someone made a mistake and planted a Ficus outside. Another impression is that it is a Leucothoe tree or a really cool and neater cultivar of Oxydendrum. The glossy, elliptic blades with nice sharp midribs get you. This is a tree with charisma and class from glimple number one. Unlobed maples are not unusual if you know the genus well. But leaves on par with any holly or broadleaf evergreen are a major revelation. This is one very suave, sophisticated maple and like so many rarities from China one is apt to increasingly stunned as the years go by. Literature says the schizrocarps are red to purple and often showy. We hope to get to know Faber's Maple better. Click on this image for larger view. LCH |
Acer coriaceifolium is another
remarkable Chinese species only hardy in zones 7 and up.
It is also found in Japan It is less glossy than Acer
fabri, has more vein texture and the apex
is clearly more acuminate or narrow. The name means "leather-leaved" and such an evergreen or semi-evergreen blade is not what we in the West expect of a maple. Click on this image for a larger version. LCH |
