Martha (nicknamed "Patsy", was mentioned in a deed of gift by her father John L. Langford, on 31 Dec. 1819, in Tattnall County, Georgia. She was married to James Robertson on 27 July 1820, in the same county. In 1850 they were living in Lowndes County, Georgia, with the children listed. It is possible that they had several other children who had already moved away from home by that time.

JOHN AND ABIGAIL LANKFORD/LANGFORD

John Lankford, as he was known in Georgia, was born about 1763, probably in Wilkes County, Georgia. We don't know the names of his parents yet; however, he named his firstborn son John, and it was customary to name the first son after the paternal grandfather. This indicates John L. Langford's father's name could also have been John. It is believed that John had three brothers: Moses, Josiah, and Parish Langford, who also fought in the war. Wilkes County, Georgia was next to the South Carolina border, separated only by the Savannah River. John's family may have moved from the Carolinas previously. Wilkes County was in the Piedmont section of Georgia, a section of good farmland and important cities. Piedmont means "foot of the mountains".

John enlisted in the company of Captain Elijah Clarke, in the Wilkes County Militia. They did duty in other states during the British occupation in the years 1780 and 1781. In 1780 he would have been a teenager of about 17. The British referred to the Wilkes County area as a "Rebel Hornet's Nest", bearing out that it was a real hotspot in the Revolutionary War.

Georgia was the last and probably the most reluctant of the colonies to join the Revolution. Although it had a small and sparsly settled population. Georgia had to face overwhelming odds. It was the only state completely conquered by the British, and occupied for two years, and finally retaken by heroic measures. Savage fighting by Americans, British, and French armies and Indians added to the destruction by bandits and left homes and property in ruins and the population badly scattered, John's family must have suffered with the rest of the populace.

On 7 April 1784 he was certified by General Clarke as a Revolutionary soldier entitled to bounty land. On 11 December 1784 he received pay from the U.S. Government for his services on an earlier expedition against the British in East Florida; he was paid f54-f. Maybe this first glimpse of Florida is what lured him back when Florida became a U.S. territory.

While living in Wilkes County he acquired 96 acres in Washington County, Georgia as bounty (in lieu of back pay for his military service), so about 1785/6 he moved to that county and occupied the bounty land. This land was free from taxation for a period of years. Sometime after his military service he met and married his wife Abigal, circa 1797,.possibly in Washington County. We have not found their marriage record so do not know her maiden name. Again, if they followed the traditional naming patterns, her father may have been named William, since that is what they named their second son. She was probably born circa 1776.

In 1784 the boundaries of Washington County consisted of "All that land lying between the Oconee and the Ogeechee Rivers, from Liberty County on the South to the Cherokee nation on the North." Much of this land was of the best quality and many people came to make homes there.

In 1801 Tattnall County was created out of the part of Washington County that John was living in; so although he was probably on the same homestead, he was now in a different county -- Tattnall County. He was granted 300 acres there in 1819, and 460 acres in 1821. Most of the children were probably born there.

On 3 December 1819 he made a deed of gift over to his children. It was recorded in Deed Book A, page 228, Tattnall County, Georgia. He signed his own name, indicating he could read and write. Abigall used an X, as she relinquished her dower rights.

It reads: "I, John Lankford, have this day, for the great love and esteem I bear towards my two sons John, and William, have this day given, to be equally divided between them, after the death of me and Abigail; and further, if either of the said sons shall depart this life before they arrive to the age of twenty-one years, then the surviving son shall have the whole of the land, to himself and his heirs; that after the death of myself and wife Abigal, they are to have the said land and premises. And we, John and Abigail Lankford, for the great love and esteem we bear for our five daughters, to wit: Patsy, Mary, Abigal, Judiatha, and Lucy Ann, do give all of our stock of horses, cattle, and hogs, and stocks of all kind, and household furniture, and all of our personal property to be divided equally between the five daughters, after the death of us, and not until our decease. We John and Abigal Lankford do retain our right and title during our natural life, to all of the personal property that we are possessed of all this time, for the purpose of supporting of the family, but all of our lands and tenements we hereby grant unto our two sons, John and William Lankford, to them and their heirs forever, after our death."

The family left Tattnall County and moved down to Lowndes County, Georgia, sometime in the 1820's. At the time of the 1830 census there were 3 males, and 2 females in the household. His son, John, Jr. was already married, and had 3 males and 1 female in his household. They moved together.

A few years later, they were on the move again, and were in Madison County, Florida by 27 January 1831. Their son William J. was married at that time to Feraby Overstreet. The Overstreet and Langford families seem to have migrated together down from Tattnall County to Lowndes County, Georgia, and then on down to Madison County, Florida. They also intermarried. John's children changed the spelling of their name to Langford after the Florida move.

Tragedy struck the family when John and Abigal's oldest son, John, Jr., was killed in the Indian Wars, probably in 1838, John, Sr., deeded 40 acres of land in Madison County to James Jasper Langford, the youngest son of the deceased John, Jr., (Deed Book A, page 210). Abigal must have died either just before or after the move to Florida, since she is not mentioned in the deed. John is not mentioned in the 1840 census of Florida as head of a household, but he may have been living with his second son, William, and his family in Columbia County, Florida. That census shows William had an elderly male about 80 years old living with him.

5.) William J. Langford, born 11 May 1811 in Tattnall County, Georgia; married 27 January 1831, in Madison County, Florida, to Feraby Overstreet; died 11 November 1875 in Polk County, Florida; buried in Mount Pisgah Cemetery, near Fort Meade, Polk County, Florida.
6.) Judatha Langford, born abt. 1812; nothing else is known.

Richard Cabal Langford was called "Cab". He was born in Madison County, Florida, in 1848. He was the tenth of eighteen children of William J. and Feraby (Overstreet) Langford.

When the war between the North and the South started, his older brothers (John, Leroy. Silas, Frank, and George) enlisted, as early as April of 1861. His father is also said to have assisted, perhaps in the cow cavalry. Cab was the last of of the boys old enough to provide some much needed help on the farm, but he must have felt compelled to do what he could for the Confederate cause. There is a family legend that Cab walked barefoot from Fort Meade to Atlanta, arriving there shortly before the final onslaught of the city by the Union forces; when he saw his older brother, Captain George R. Langford, the brotherly advice was that he should turn back immediately for home, and his "momma" - - that the danger of death or injury was great, and there were enough Langfords in it already.

Cab, still barefoot, walked all the way back to Fort Meade, the round trip taking about 30 days. His pension application states that during the year 1864 he joined the Bradford County Home Guard at Lake Butler, under Captain Joseph R. Richard, in the Company of Capt. J.J. Dickison. He was sent with the unit to the Battle of Missionary Ridge in Tennessee but was sent home because he was young and too small for service. He was sixteen years old.

Cab's mother, seeking a safer place to reside, while her husband and older sons were away, had traveled about 200 miles south to the Fort Meade area of Polk County. After the war, most of the boys and their father came to the new home near Ft. Meade and remained in the area, marrying and raising their own families.

Cab married Meddie Lightsey on March 19, 1876 in Polk County and remained in the Fort Meade area. He farmed and raised cattle. He served one term as Polk County Commissioner and eventually went into the real estate business in Fort Meade, and together with one of his sons, built a nice brick store building there in 1907. His letterhead proclaimed him as a dealer in "Phosphate, Timber, Fruit and Vegetable Lands", with a line in smaller type: "Correspondence Solicited" - - this in 1908.

In 1908 he submitted an application for a pension based on his Confederate Military service. At the same time, he included a letter to the officer in charge, in which he advised: "I should like it entered on your books (without pay until applied for) fearing as I do, that if all who are entitled to pensions under the law, draw them, it will cut short the funds for such an extent that poor widows and orphan children who are depending on their pensions for a living, would suffer." On June 19, 1921 Cab filed, at age 72, a Soldier's Pension Claim, which this time was approved and he was paid the small pension believed to be about $60 per year. He died on March 14, 1922, and was buried beside his wife in Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Meade.

He is described as a very friendly man who enjoyed company, and was very hospitable.

William Morris Langford was born 27 June 1876 in Ft. Meade, Polk County, Florida; he died in 1959, aged 81.

He married Mary Catherine Lanier on 18 March 1900 at Fort Basinger, Florida.

Mary Catherine Lanier was born on 6 September 1881 in Dade City, Florida, (daughter of Hardy Lanier).

In his younger days he worked in citrus, farming, and cattle. He used to drive cattle from the Basinger area to Port Tampa and load them on boats. They drove them right down the main street of Yboe City, 7th Avenue, which was made of dirt. By the time they got them to Port Tampa they were poor and skinny. Sometimes on the drive they had to drink water from mud puddles by putting it through a handkerchief.

As a young man he also was a carpenter in the phosphate mines at Mulberry. At one time he was chief of police at Mulberry, and also was a deputy under Sheriff Wilder.

When Morris and his wife Mary Catherine were expecting their first child they were living at Fort Basinger. His parents were living at Arcadia and the prospective parents were going to Arcadia for the birth. The only way to get from Fort Basinger to Arcadia, other than walking or horseback, was to get on a steamboat at Basinger and go to Kissimmee, then go from there by train. They were on their way. When they got to Kissimmee it was time for Irene to be born. The boat captain made all the crew leave the boat and they got a doctor from Kissimmee and Irene was born on the boat, this was August 6, 1901. The crew were really excited about this event and showered the baby with gifts. Morris, his wife and baby went right on back to Fort Basinger.

In 1932 Morris moved his family to Bartow because W.W. (Bill) Chase was elected sheriff and hired Morris as a deputy. He was with Chase through all of his terms in office. After that he was constable until he couldn't see well enough to drive. Then he went to work as a courthouse watchman, working there until his death at 81 years.

REMEMBERING GRANDMA

Grandma made quite an impression on me, even though I was only twelve years old when she died. We didn't live close to her, but visited fairly often, mostly at holidays and summertime. My first memories of her are visiting her in Frostproof as a preschooler, before she moved to Orlando. She was in the kitchen a lot! Once her cow got loose in the garden, and I saw her run after the cow and chase it out. I liked to watch her wash her clothes in the lake, and wondered why everyone didn't do their laundry in a lake.

We looked forward to her occasional visits to Fort Lauderdale, when she would stay with us for a few days. She enjoyed everything we did to entertain her even though it was usually something pretty simple, like going to the beach or a picnic. I enjoyed sharing my room with her and reading books with her. We would prop ourselves up with pillows and read orally (she took one page and I took the next). One time Chief came in the room and said to her "I thought you always told us to never read in bed!" and she giggled. We read "The Yearling" by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings one summer and another time we started "The Good Earth" by Pearl Buck (didn't finish that one). I was about 8 or 9, so probably wasn't that great as a reader, but she was very encouraging. It helped foster a lifetime addiction to reading for me.

She was one of the few Republicans I knew personally as a child. When a news reel at the movie theater showed Thomas Dewey as a candidate for President, she was one of only a few that cheered. She showed courage in her convictions, even if they weren't popular.

Grandma was nice to be around because she always noticed the nice things about whomever she was with. It made me want to live up to her high opinions.

She was proud of all her children and their accomplishments, and bragged about them. One day, my dad (Hugh) was teasing her and said "You think all your children are perfect, don't you?" She replied, "All but one!".

She and my grandfather must have had a very happy marriage. She was also proud of him, and talked about him in a matter-of-fact way, as though she had seen him the day before, although he died twenty-five years before her.

My dad said she was one of the few perfect people he knew, in kindness and sincerity.

Thanks to all of my aunts and uncles who contributed to this book, I now know my grandfather and can appreciate him more.

The two of them were a great team who passed on to us all a rich heritage of a close and loving family, working and enjoying life to the fullest--and one very special ingredient--a sense of humor! Let's pass it on.

The first time she ever sewed anything was when she found some overalls which had already been cut out. She sewed the back to the front. Then when her mother came in she showed her how to do it correctly. I don't recall exactly how old she was but she was quite young.
<p>
She had a special diamond ring that went through a fire. She thought she had lost it for good. Afterwards she went over and was looking at a brick and saw something sparkle, and it was the diamond out of her ring. So she had it set into another setting and kept it all her life. Right now her granddaughter Penny has the ring.
<p>
She got the ring as a present from her father who was always bringing presents to the family, and had promised it to her. He also brought her a camera another time. Being the oldest girl she was pampered more or less by her father. She was not his pet, but was special.
<p>
One of the stories she used to tell was about the time she went blackberry picking with the Ashley gang members.
<p>
She said the only car she knew how to drive was a Model T Ford. She told about the time she got in a Model T Ford and went down a dirt road. When she got so far down she couldn;t go any further so she had to back it all the way back.
<p>
When she married my dad they moved into the house he had grown up in, and she lived there the rest of her life. Irene and I were born there and grew up there. My dad's mother died of childbirth when he was born and his daddy died soon after, but he was raised by his Aunt Lila.
<p>
When I used to visit Grandma I would get a ride from Mr. Jones, the vegetable man. He sold vegetables and would come by our house and I would ride back and forth to Frostproof with him. That old car would shake, shake, shake up the big hill and sometimes it would make it and sometimes it wouldn't, and I would get out and help him push it up the hill
<p>
Mama always loved the water and especially loved to float on her back.
<p>
She walked to town to get all her groceries or to go to the doctor or get anything else she needed.
<p>
She loved Fort Meade and all her friends there. She loved to go to church and do things with the people there. She also sewed for everybody for as long as she could -- until her eyesight began to fail her.
<p>
She loved company. She loved to have friends and relatives come to visit and really enjoyed cooking for them. Whenever I would bring friends home they were always welcome and she always had some food for them.
<p>
She also loved to help people!

Alma was always young at heart. She was fun-loving, and a delight to be with. She was hard-working, but enjoyed life, and made life enjoyable for others with her good nature and happy disposition.

She'd cut out the pattern, then begin to sew;
Soon a new garment would begin to show.
Often she worked way into the night:
To make sure what she was doing, was done just right.

Most all of her work was done for another:

Aunt Essie wrote the following on Wednesday, February 13, 1985.

Mama and Papa were as different as could be, but I've heard that opposites make good marriages. Mama had been brought up in the church, never drank or smoked, and her family never went swimming, played games, or read anything except religious books and articles on Sunday. Papa very seldom went to church except camp meetings and revivals in tents. He drank but never smoked or gambled, and was truly a good person. He loved children very much.

Clyde was a hardworking boy and man all his life. One time when he was about 10 he was found out in the chicken house setting on the roost, saying "It don't do a bit of good." When asked what he meant he said that he had been told that if you ate red peppers and sat on the roost they would not be hot.

Alma, the first girl and only 3 years and 1 month older than I, remembered sitting on the arm of papa's chair and combing his thick black wavy hair. I only remember a fringe of gray and mostly bald head. Don't know if it changed that fast or with four of us by then we found more to do. She and Joe were quite a pair. Once they lighted the kitchen curtains on fire and grabbed me and ran out of the house. She said that one day I fell in a tub of water (they may have pushed me in so I wouldn't follow them around) and they pulled me out. She always said I owed her for saving my life twice.

Joe and Alma palled around together and got into trouble several times for such things as picking every leaf off a camphor tree. Joe was sort of quiet and unemotional. Our father had hair clippers and forceps. About once a month he'd call us all in and work on us. Once Joe came in with a toothache and tried to show papa which tooth hurt. Papa pulled it - - he thought - - but Joe said, "You've pulled the wrong tooth!" And Gladys would run to the back of the orange grove and climb up to the top of one, and when he finally got her down she screamed bloody murder even if she didn't need any work done.

Now as for me (Essie) I was about the quietest one and and the only one who'd rather help Mama in the kitchen or house than go out and work with animals, the only one who never learned to milk a cow. (I never liked the front end.) Until I was about 16 I never went to the store alone or did any shopping for myself.

Now as for Hugh and Gladys - - they were always partners in crime and fun, etc. They ran away with a neighbor boy several times and went swimming. I don't remember them ever getting lost. As a small boy Hugh would soap his hair all the time. I think he liked suds. I don't remember him ever getting soap in his eyes. As he got a little older he'd use Vaseline hair tonic and wear a skull cap; we all thought that's why his hair was so wavy. He was in action, humor, etc., more like Papa than any of the boys, but Shorty looked more like him.

Gladys drove from 12 years old. She was stopped and made to quit for awhile, but soon she'd started again. She and Alma both liked to drive. I didn't learn until I was 18 and was out of school and needed to drive to go anywhere. Gladys was a good driver, but she was into any devilment she could find.

The six oldest children had a light case of smallpox but it wasn't as bad as chicken pox - - and we'll never have them again. I never hear of anyone having chicken pox these days.

Ruth is next in line. She died a few days before her 5th birthday. She was real pretty but had a bad abscess on one leg. The doctors debated on what to do, and finally operated; it was just as she was trying to walk. Therefore, that leg was a little shorter than the other one. A man from New York that Papa shipped fruit to, visited one time and as Ruth walked by he said, "You even have one that walks like you." She used to peel tangerines and put them on the dirty serving back door steps for us to eat as we came home from school - - and we even ate them.

Alton was next and the largest baby Mama had. Of course, Papa said he needed a big name - - so he called him Big Chief until they finally decided on Alton as Papa had a bridge building friend with that name. Odd how he turned out to do bridge work!

When Papa would take a load of us children out in the woods on a picnic (I'm sure it was to give Mama a little peace and quiet) we'd all get to pick what we wanted to take. Alton always said the two best foods were bananas and coffee. Papa would take a nap and let us roam the woods.

Then Beth came. She seemed to me more stubborn than any of us. I remember one time when she was quite young she climbed a telephone pole and coming down skinned her inside legs very badly. She didn't seem to have the sense of humor that the rest of us had. Both Beth and I were valedictorians of our class. I don't remember any others. She became a good secretary. I remember one time Tenny was chasing Shorty (Vernon), perhaps for a fight, and Beth yelled "Shorty, run! The coward will catch you!"

Now Tennyson came along. He was real quiet and also smart. Never argue with him as he was and is usually right! He enjoyed roaming through the woods and gathering wild flowers. He is still very fond of flowers. One time he came to Mama with some paper in his ear he couldn't get out. Mama asked him how it got there and he said "I was just walking by the piano and it blew off into my ears."

Shorty (Vernon) - was 2 years and 2 weeks younger than Tenny, and in a way had Mama sorta wrapped around his finger. He had a cute, shy smile. One of his teachers, about 4th grade, lived with another teacher and often spoke of that cute Shorty Langford. So the other teacher told her to send a note to her and ask him to wait for an answer. It wasn't sealed and Shorty opened and read it. He came home that night bragging about how cute he was. He always went places with Papa when the rest of us were in school. Once they ate in Ft. Meade at a restaurant and Papa picked up a few toothpicks and put them in his pocket. Shorty did likewise and said, "Well Papa, we got all of them!"

Four years later Ruby arrived, the last of twelve. She was only 2 1/2 when Papa died. She was swimming before that. We had to watch her as she'd run down the dock and jump right in. Then she'd swim under water to a part of the dock, but she was faster than lightning. I'm sure she missed Papa very much, as she hardly even remembers him.

Hugh was the fifth child, and the third son in his family. He was born at the "Old Place", about 7 miles out of Frostproof. When he was about four they moved to the home on Silver Lake, which is when he remembered all of the children becoming so proficient in the water that a friend of their father paid them to do special swimming and diving tricks for his entertainment. He said: "We didn't have much money in those days but we had the finest group of people we could have to play with -- even though we fought a lot too."

When he was eleven they moved back to the old place for two years. He was in the dairy business (his father's). He said he made the mistake of learning to milk with both hands and from then on he was stuck with it.

His brother Alton (Chief) told this story about Hugh and the dairy business. "My dad told Hugh that if he milked one of our cows morning and night and there was more than a gallon of milk (which was needed for the house) he could sell the rest. So he was selling six quarts of milk to the pharmacist. The cow started drying up a little bit so he started going down to the lake and adding a little bit of water to it in order to make the ten quarts a day. My dad saw him and didn't say anything about it until we were eating supper. Dad said: "Hugh, Doc Cannon called me today and said that they found a minnow in the milk and Hugh had to cut out some of his deliveries." Hugh, Gladys, and Chief got up at 4:30 to milk the cows, strain the milk and bottle it to take to customers on the way to school. In later years Hugh bought a ranch near Okeechobee. When he bought cattle they were strictly beef cattle, as he wanted nothing more to do with milking!

Chief also said: "Hugh excelled in many areas. He wanted to be the best and he worked toward it. He made three grades his first year in school. He entered the fourth grade the second year in school." Beth said "he was the champion fruit picker in the area." He was also a very good swimmer and diver, and later dived for pay.

Sometimes he thought his father was pretty strict. When Hugh was 14 he got an outside job. His father charged him $5.00 a week for board and $2.00 for "freedom". Hugh was earning $12.00 for a six day week (1922) which was pretty good for his age, but at that time it didn't seem fair to him to have to pay for "freedom". His dad didn't need the money particularly, but it was to prepare him for taking care of himself later. (This training was to come in very handy for him.) Hugh really enjoyed the weekend camping and picnicking trips his father planned for the family, however, so they did have some time for play.

His mother's influence was also felt very strongly. She was the one who sent the children to Sunday School and tried to impress them with the Golden Rule. While their father taught with firmness, she taught with love. She also impressed the importance of respect for others on him. One time Hugh referred to a hired man by his last name. She said: "Call him <U>Mister...</U>" and gave him the only spanking he can remember her giving him. She thought her son was being disrespectful to an adult.

He developed quite an interest in the family history as he was growing up. He had a great-uncle, George R. Langford, who used to visit the family. Uncle George, and Madison , had quite a sense of humor and had a good time together. Uncle George told the children many tales of the Civil War and other happenings well before the war, as he was born in 1839. (He may have embroidered slightly on the details, but he was a very good storyteller.)

When he was sixteen his father died suddenly, and Hugh left home to make his own way in the world. He went down to Fort Lauderdale in 1925 and joined the construction firm , Powell and Quinn (later to become Powell Brothers), and started working at bridge building. After a few years of work became very scarce so he decided to travel around the states and see some more scenery. he hitchhiked, walked, rode trains as far west as Denver, Colorado. He got jobs along the way, such as dish washing, etc., to pay for his food. He enjoyed meeting all the other men on the road and learned to make "slumgullion" (a stew made by combining whatever foods each person around the campfire could contribute). When the weather turned cool in the fall he decided to head back to Florida.

Powell Brothers hired him again to work on a bridge at Palatka. He, with his brothers Joe, and Chief, went to a dance in nearby San Mateo, and met his future wife, Mildred Haynes.

After their marriage and the completion of the Palatka Bridge, the newlyweds went back to Frostproof and lived in a house owned by his mother for awhile , while he picked oranges for a living and planted a garden to supplement their food. Their first child, Sylvia, was also born there. Food was pretty scarce during this time, the middle of the depression.

When Powell Brothers started hiring again he went back with them and remained with the same firm the rest of his life. He became Vice-President of the firm and did much traveling all over Florida, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, etc., as part of his job. He became President of The Broward Builder;s Exchange in 1964, in Fort Lauderdale.

He settled in Fort Lauderdale in 1943 with his family, after moving around often to several Florida cities because of his construction work. There he stayed.

He loved working with people, and found everyone interesting. He especially enjoyed children, and always carried around Life Savers to give the little ones. He never talked down to children, but treated them as though they were just as important as adults. His sisters have said that he was very much like his own father, as far as personality goes.

His favorite sport (or hobby?) was golf. He also enjoyed tracing his family tree, and liked to visit relatives to talk about that. He was an avid reader.

His favorite quotation was "If you want to be loved, be lovable."

I was born in Uvalde, Georgia on January 25th 1921. My family moved to Boynton Beach, Florida in the spring of 1925. This was Boom Time in South Florida. I started school at age 5-1/2 years, September 1926. My Mother and Father were divorced in 1926.

My Mother opened a small hotel, this was where I was raised. The hurricane of 1926 did not do much damage, since Miami was really the center of the storm. Then in 1928 a hurricane hit us and Boynton Beach was the center of the storm. We lost everything (The Red Cross gave me clothes to wear). This was the storm that continued on to South Bay where so many people were killed, after that was when they put the dike around Lake Okeechobee.

Mother, with the help of many friends, reopened the Hotel.

In 1929 all the Banks closed, the depression really hit South Florida. I always knew what it was to have a dollar and to how to prepare inexpensive meals to look like a banquet. Which was necessary in the Hotel and Restaurant business. I never knew what it was not to work. Being in South Florida, most of our business was the tourist trade. We had customers that would come back each year, some as long as a span of twenty years. Then, of course, we had rooms rented to Business Associates, School Teachers, Construction Workers, and Fruit Packers. At that time, as well as now, Florida was famous for fresh fruit and vegetables.

That was when I met Chief, he came to Boynton Beach, February 1936 to replace a Bridge over the Inter-Coastal Waterway. He stayed at the Hotel. At that time he was engaged to a girl, Eunice Ells, that lived in Indiantown, FL..

Christmas Eve 1936, my Mother was hit by a car as she was walking to a service station to get gas because her car had run out of gas. I was fifteen years old at that time, I managed the Hotel and Restaurant in the absence of my Mother she was on the critical list for a very long time. Since my Mother had done the cooking and baking, that was also became my job. We had "No Vacancy" in the Hotel, since this was the tourist season.

After Chief broke up with Eunice, he asked me for a date, however, because of my Mother's accident, I had to break our first date. I graduated from Boynton Beach High School June 2, 1938, and married Chief June 12, 1938. When we were first married we lived in Hialeah, FL. We moved to Ft. Lauderdale in the spring of 1939. Chief, being in the Construction Business, we had to "follow the work", causing us to move many times. I have lived in several places throughout the State, but our Home base was always Ft. Lauderdale. Believe me this is the best part of Florida to live.

We had two children, Glenn and Barbara Jean. In September 1951, I was employed by the School Board of Broward County. I was hired as a baker for the 8th grade Public School System. At that time everyone that was in the 8th grade in Broward County attended this school at Naval Air Station. Both the 7th and 8th grade was under the Supervision of Al Wilkins, Principal, at the beginning of 1952 school term.

At that time I was made manager of the 7th grade cafeteria. In March 1957 the school was divided, half went with Al Wilkins to Sunrise Junior High and half stayed at Naval Air with Tasso Sharp, Principal, that school became Rogers Junior High. I continued to work for Mr. Wilkins until 1965 when he was promoted to an Administration position.

My new Principal was Norman Swigler. After a year he transferred to Fort Lauderdale High School. Then George Campbell became my Principal. In 1968 I took on an additional school. I managed the cafeteria at Parkway Junior High. January 1972, I left Sunrise Junior High only after I transferred to Piper High.

I was promoted to the County Office as Buyer for the Broward County School Food Service. I purchased equipment, warehouse supplies, contracted services (Cash Register repair, trucks, calculators, Pest control). I bought everything except food.

Glenn married Lynda February 1960, they had two children, Julie and David. After ten years they were divorced and Glenn married Grace Rooney, they had a son, Michael. September 24, 1983 Glenn married Doreen Weisel. July 2, 1987, Barbara Jean married married John Bannon.

I lost Chief to cancer June 22, 1986 after 48 years together. I retired from the School Board of Broward County December 1986 after 35-1/2 years of service. March, I was employed as an consultant and returned to work for the School Board. I'm still trying to retire and play golf. I have been dating a very nice gentleman, Jay Bora. I'm looking forward to traveling and enjoying life
