"TALKING THEM IN" AT BERLIN -GCA (Ground Controlled
Approach) operator Master Sgt. Edward H. Bryant Jr., Clarksville,
Missouri, watches the scanning screen of the mobile radar unit at
Tempelhof Air Force Base, Berlin , Germany, and gives landing
instructions to the pilot of an airlift plane. Sgt. Bryant has radio
contact with the pilot of the plane, and gives the instructions
over a "lip microphone." The radar control panel in front of the
GCA operator is one of two such panels with which the mobile
GCA unit is equipped. Pilots and radar operators use the GCA
equipment even during good weather to improve their skill
and to be prepared for the frequent periods of
bad weather at Berlin.
