Survived War Brother of "Bloody Bill" Anderson. Reported killed 10 May 1867 in Texas by George H. Shepherd to avenge his part in the murder and robbery of Ike Flannery, Shepherd's nephew. Jesse James and Anderson killed Flannery for his inherited money. Shepherd slit Anderson's throat on the lawn of the state capital building in Austin, TX.

KIA 1864 Reared and educated in Huntsville, Randolph County, MO. Moved to Council Grove, KS, where his father was killed in the border wars. Married Miss Bush Smith of Sherman, TX, probably in Dec 1863. On 26 October 1864, Anderson and his men were isolated in Ray County MO by General Price's defeat. Camped one mile north of Orick, MO, he was located by a Union force commanded by Majors Samuel Cox and John Grimes with 150 men of the 51st and 33rd Missouri Infantry from Ray, Davies and Caldwell Counties. Major Cox buried him in an unmarked grave in the Richmond, MO cemetery. The command of his unit was taken over by Archie Clements. Indicted 18 Nov 1863 for the murder of George Burt at Lawrence, 21 Aug 1863.

Arnold of Lafayette County, MO to go with them to the home of Judge Gray in Jackson County, MO, who was forced at pistol point to marry Miss Barbara Jane Gray to James W. Wilkinson. Caught 5 April 1864 by Kansas's cavalry. He was left unburied, considered not worthy of burial.

He died at R.I. of typhoid on 26 Dec that same year. He was a conscript; “private, unassigned recruit.” Born ca. 1816 in Kentucky, Case lived in Monroe Co MO (east-central MO) just prior to the war. Bacon Montgomery killed him in Lexington, MO.

Shephard, swore to avenge Ike, killing James Anderson, the brother of "Bloody Bill" Anderson on the lawn of the state capitol in Austin, TX.

Became prominent farmer and deputy sheriff of Jackson County, Missouri. Wrote a manuscript of the war years. Served as one of  the pallbearers for both John and Cole Younger. Died 22 April 1916. One of the originals ten recruits.William H. Gregg was born February 8, 1838, to Jacob and Nancy Lewis Gregg in Jackson
       County, Missouri. He married Elizabeth Eleanor Hook of Odessa on November 1864. They had five
       children. Gregg served under William Clarke Quantrill from December 1861 through the winter of
       1863/1864. He left Quantrill's band near Sherman, Texas, at which time he joined General Joe Shelby
       and was made a captain in Shanks' Brigade. After the war he returned to his farm in Jackson County,

According to the Confederate pension application (approved) submitted by his widow in 1930, James Overton Hinde died 14 November 1928, San Angelo TX. Service with Quantrell's men noted as Co. A, Todd's Missouri Cavalry, Shelby's Brigade, 1863-1865. Affidavits in support of Mrs. Hinde's pension (#49127 Tom Green County) were submitted by Tom W. Palmer (brother of Allen H. Palmer, on this roster) and from Thomas H. Hinde (brother of James O. Hinde), and from Frank Smith (also a member of Quantrell's rangers).
Mrs. Hinde's pension was approved 8 Jan 1931 and continued until her death 27 February 1942 (Dallas TX).
James O. Hinde was the son of Rodney M. Hinde and his wife Catherine "Kitty" Scholl of Independence, Jackson Co. MO. Hinde's service is mentioned several places, including p. 90 of McCorkle's "Three Years with Quantrell". Jim Hinde was first cousin to Quantrell's men Boone and George Scholl.

Armed with more than a dozen witnesses saying that he was indeed laid up in Olathe, he was acquitted. Last seen headed towards Missouri with his wife who had tethered two houses outside the courthouse expecting a verdict of guilty. William and George W. are probably the same person.

Because he was one of the few men who had a  rifle, he was made scout and sniper. Most often, he rode with the  Todd group. Was at the battles of Baxter Springs, Centralia, and Fayette among others. Also at Lawrence 21 Aug 1863. Went to Ky with Quantrill and was at the home of Mr. Thurman when Quantrill was ambushed and murdered. Surrendered with George Wigginton and another at Newcastle, Ky. After the war, he returned to his home county and worked on the farm of a relative. His memories , "Three Years With Quantrill", were dictated to a  writer, who took the information as it  was given. McCorkle died 14 Jan 1918, age 79, and was buried on a bluff over looking the MO River at Lisbon, MO.

Later, the body made its way back to MO, was claimed by his father and buried in the Muddy Fork Cemetery north of the James farm.

Too young to join the Confederate Army, he later rode up with Quantrill and Anderson. Was at Centralia. His mother, upon finding Union troop camped in her back yard and in the process of butchering her milk cow, decided to fix the troops some coffee and put something in it to make them sick. After realizing what had happened they decided to hang her. A rope had been put around her neck when an officer asked: 'Are you the mother of Plunk Murray'? Earlier he had been given a drink of water on a hot day by her son. Realizing this, he released her.

Frank James had saved Pence's life during a battle at Beulahville in Meade County during the War.  Pence died of typhoid pneumonia on 25 February 1896, and buried at Stoner's Chapel burial grounds.  Frank James was there. In 1969 the Ellis Hotel in Samuel's Depot was torn down, and Donnie Pence's house was razed by its present owner, Charles S. Hayden, to make room for a larger and more modern home.  Married a Samuel girl, and became a relative of the James boys.

Killed 1865-Trapped in barn at Wakefield farm, about one mile from Smiley, KY by  Edward Terrell and his cavalry detachment of hired assassins. While attempting to escape, he was struck by two Spencer balls, one in  the hand, the other paralyzing him from the waist down. Transferred to a military hospital in Louisville, then to a Catholic Hospital in Louisville. He died there at 4pm, 6 June 1865. He was buried in the old Portland Catholic Cemetery at Louisville. In 1887, his mother had his bones brought back to Ohio. The man she paid to remove the body stole some of the skeleton, and years later, parts of it showed up in the hands of a Kansas collector. In 1993, these parts were moved to Higginsville, MO, and re-interred in the Confederate Cemetery there.

Traced by to Missouri, where  detectives caught him at one of the family homes (his father's,  George's, or his own) 4 April 1868. Ordered to surrender. One report says he tried to shoot his way out, and was shot 7 times and killed. The other report, from eyewitness Margaret Shephard, his grand daughter, said he was unarmed, and was shot 20 times and killed by police officers in 1868. Survived War His family was originally from Virginia, moving first to Nelson County, KY, then to Jackson County, MO.  Born on a farm near Independence, in Jackson County, MO, 17 January 1842. At 15, he joined the troops of General Albert Sidney Johnston for the operations against the Mormons in Utah.  Joined the Confederate Army at the outbreak of the war, and fought honorably at Wilson's Creek and Pea Ridge. When General Price was ordered east of the Mississippi, George returned home and joined Quantrill. Married Martha Sanders Maddox (see Matt Sanders), a widow after the war. She was a Confederate spy.  Spent time in KY penitentiary, for trying to hold up the bank at  Russellville, KY on 20 March 1868. Uncle of Ike Flannery, who was  killed by Jesse James after the War for his inheritance. Reported  to have wounded Jesse James at Short Creek (near Joplin, MO), in a  plot with Jesse to get the reward money.  Killed James Anderson, brother of "Bloody Bill" Anderson by cutting his throat on the lawn of the state capitol in Austin, Texas.

KIA 21 Aug  1863-Was completely drunk during the Lawrence massacre. Upon entering Lawrence, he lowered the Union flag, tied it to the tail of his horse, and dragged it through the town as he fought from street to street. Staying behind, he was shot by an arrow from an Indian named White Turkey, his body torn apart by enraged townspeople. Only guerrilla to die in town.

Hinde (Jim Hinde) and that he was one of Quantrell's company. That he remained in Missouri for several years after the war, then moved to the State of Texas. And I understand he located at San Angelo, Texas, where he resided for a number of years prior to his death. (signed) Frank Smith." Livivg in Blue Springs, Mo., 1930's.

KIA, 1864. Was a bridge mason before the war and with the MSG before joining Quantrill Jan 1862. Killed at Independence, MO, 21 October 1864, just east of the Little Blue River by a Union sharpshooter. The guerrillas pushed Generals Blunt, Jennison, and Moonlight 2 1/2 miles northeast of Independence, where a sniper shot him. He was carried by is men to the house of a Mrs. Burns, where he died about an hour later. His men buried him that  night in the Independence Cemetery. David Poole then took command of his unit. Indicted 18 Nov 1863 for the murder of George Burt at Lawrence, 21 Aug 1863

Survived War. Saved Quantrill's life on two occasions. Leaving Price's Army  Quantrill informed Andrew of a plan to raid the home of Andrew's father, Morgan. Informed neighbors, probably because of his attraction to Walker's sister, Nannie (Anna) and with eleven others defeated the marauders. She became Quantrill's mistress. In this action, the first Union soldier killed in Jackson County during the Civil War was killed by Quantrill. She was later won over by Joe Vaughan. This was the first mention of Quantrill's named in Jackson county, Mo.

KIA 1 Aug 1864-Present on the Independence and Lawrence, KS raid. Wounded at Arrow Rock, MO Aug 1863. Made the famous Council Grove raid 130 miles west of the Missouri state line 4 May 1863 where with 23 others, formed up at the edge of town. To the relief of the towns people, only Yeager rode up, in desperate need of a dentist. The tooth was pulled with the agreement that the town be spared. The rebels then rode off to sack the town of Diamond Springs, then returning to Missouri, leaving a trail of death and destruction behind them. Taking to the woods near Frankfort, close to home of Ike Flannery's father, he was Killed two weeks later, 1 Aug 1864 by Federals. On Roster of 6 July 1862. Joined because the Jayhawkers took everything from his father's farm.
