(10/3/97) ADMUSSEN _ Beloved mother, Helen Admussen (nee Herring) of Calgary, passed away suddenly at her residence on October 1, 1997, at the age of 71 years. Helen was born and grew up in the Sunnyslope area, later residing in the Acme area. Here she raised her family, later moving to Calgary in 1969. Helen will be sadly missed by her friends and family, Gladys and Russ Wiebe of Edmonton, Bob Herring of Kelowna, B.C., Dianne and Michael Paduano of Calgary, Don and Irene Herring of Lloydminster, Brenda and Malcolm Langley of Calgary, Jacqueline Parmley of Calgary, and Fred and Nadine Admussen of Calgary; as well as nineteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband John Herring, Chris Admussen and her dear friend Ray Farand. (10/3/97) BRUNSDEN _ Alice Kathleen (Mollie) Brunsden (nee Adams) passed away at the Bow View Manor on September 30, 1997. Mrs. Brunsden was predeceased by her husband E.W. (Ted) Brunsden, former M.P. in 1976. She is survived by her daughter Marjorie (Al) Bahan, grandchildren, Mark (Sabina) and Lisa, great-grandchildren, Cameron, and Mikaela of Calgary; her daughter Suzanne (George) Wilkinson, grandchildren, Kathy and Bob (Rena), great-grandchildren, Dustin, Brittany and Crystal of Brooks, Alberta; as well as her son E.D. (Ed) Brunsden of Vancouver B.C. Born in Neepawa, Manitoba on July 7, 1900, Mollie came to Calgary with her parents in 1920. She was well-known in musical circles both as a choir member and soloist. The Brunsden's lived in Brooks, Alberta from 1945 to 1967. Mollie was a member of the Bow Valley Chapter O.E.S. (10/3/97) CHRISTIE _ Norman J. Christie passed away peacefully on September 26, 1997. He was the beloved husband and best friend of Marion Christie; and beloved father of two sons, Norman (Maxine), Kevin (Joanne); and daughter Carol Juhasz (Jim); grandchildren, Linda, Bruce, Kaura, Jason, Shaun, Kyle and Megan; and two great-grandsons, Joshua and Corey. He is also survived by his brother Bryce (Golden); a sister Olliffe McNally (Bill); and a sister-in-law Peggy. He was predeceased by his brother Gordon and sister Ann. Norman was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on August 1, 1914. His parents brought him to Calgary in 1919 and then to Winnipeg, Manitoba where he attended high school and was awarded a scholarship to attend Colorado School of Mines. He graduated in 1935 with a Geological Engineering degree (Geophysics major). In that same year, he returned to Canada with Heiland Exploration (the only geophysical survey party then in Canada), on a survey for Imperial Oil, near Lethbridge, Alberta. Here, Norm made his first important discovery, meeting his future wife Marion. The Heiland job completed, he worked briefly for the Canadian Western Natural Gas Company acquiring productive leases in the Turner Valley Gas field, and then Seismograph Service Corporation in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. In 1936, he joined United Geophysical Company's first seismic crew as a seismic computer in California. Norman worked for United throughout Canada, the US, England and Puerto Rico. Returning to Canada in 1942, he contributed to the discovery of the Jumping Pound wet gas field by Shell Oil in 1947. In 1950, he returned to Calgary permanently and started his own geophysical company, Exploration Consultants Inc. He was one of the pioneers in the development of magnetic tape recording of seismic data. In 1964 when the company was acquired by Independent Exploration, he became president of Canadian operations. In 1965 when Independent was acquired by Teledyne Exploration, he remained as president of the Canadian subsidiary and senior vice president of Teledyne Exploration of Houston, Texas until his retirement in 1979. Norman participated in the development of the modern Canadian Petroleum industry from Turner Valley to Jumping Pound, Leduc, Swan Hills, Rainbow, Beaufort Sea and West Pembina. In 1965, Norman received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Colorado School of Mines in recognition of his contributions to the profession of Geophysics. Norman gave freely of his time and knowledge in the interests of both his community and his profession. He was president of the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists in 1952 and, in 1963, he was elected the first non-US president of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. He served on the council of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists from 1970 to 1973 and as vice president in 1974. Through his retirement he continued to serve APEGGA in a variety of capacities including the Board of Examiners and Discipline committees. He also initiated the Canadian Endowed Scholarship Fund at the Colorado School of Mines for Canadian students. Norman was a member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club and a past member of the Calgary Petroleum Club. The family wishes to thank the staff of Unit 200 of the Beverly Nursing Home, the Rockyview Hospital Emergency staff and Unit 47 staff for their care and kindness to Norman and his family. She is survived by her grandchildren, Tom and Terri-Jo, James, Rob, Mary, Sarah, and Peter. Charlie and Olive enjoyed many years of travel, photography, mountain climbing, hiking and snow-shoeing together. They especially enjoyed winters in Mexico. (10/3/97) GEHRING _ Harold, our beloved father, passed away Sunday, September 28, 1997 at the Peter Lougheed Hospital at the age of 81 years. He is survived by his loving children, June, Wallace, Gwen, Elva (Terry); his adoring grandchildren, Selene (Jeff), Corey, Cherokee, Chad; two great-granddaughters, Alora and Holly and a brother Edward. Stuart was born February 1, 1965 in Regina, Saskatchewan. He was educated in Calgary and at the Grenville Christian College in Brockville, Ontario. Stuart graduated from SAIT receiving his hotel management and accounting diplomas and was working towards his C.G.A. He enjoyed hockey, biking, hiking, and playing rugby with the Saracens Rugby Club, as well, he was a member of Toastmasters. Stuart was a true animal lover. He enjoyed travelling and made adventures of his travels. He is survived by his loving parents, Gordon and Joan, and his brother David, all of Calgary. He is also survived by several uncles, aunts, and cousins; and is lovingly remembered by his uncle John and aunty Joyce Kelly of Calgary. (10/3/97) KYTYK _ Annie, 88 years. Grandmother, mother, sister, wise woman. Born Annie Peidwerbeski near Borden, Saskatchewan a lifetime ago, she grew up poor on the prairies. The eldest of many children, Annie left school at an early age to support her family and eventually fall in love. She married Peter Belyk and together they had three children, Sophie Anne, Nestor and Andrew. Annie survived the Depression and the loss of her first husband and second child. She later married Nick Kytyk and moved from full-time farming, retiring in Saskatoon. She took great pleasure in gardening and always gave thanks for small miracles like rain and sunshine. Annie is survived by her daughter Sophie Anne Penney; her son Andrew Peter Belyk; grandchildren, Melodie Anne, Kirk, Kerrie, and Merrin; brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces, and nephews. We will miss shelling peas with her, the taste of summer borscht, gazing in amazement at her wonderful garden and the sparkle of her eyes...windows to a soul who knew much pain in this life, but gave great joy. She is survived by four children, two daughters, Margaret (Ross) Glass and Eileen (Ewan) Ferrier; two sons, Gordon (Ulla) Mackenzie and Bill (Rosalind) Mackenzie, all of Calgary; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. Ruth was predeceased by her loving husband Thomas in May, 1997. She was born in Scotland on July 26, 1898 and was married to her husband Tom for sixty-nine years. Ruth and Tom enjoyed may years of hunting, fishing and outdoor activities in the West, with a special love for the mountains. Ruth was a loving wife, and mother, and will be sadly missed. She was an outgoing, caring person who touched everyone she met, "To know her was to love her". The family wish to thank Dr. G. (10/3/97) MEETSMA _ With grace, faith and dignity, Henry Meetsma, beloved husband of Grace, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, October 1, 1997 at the age of 80 years. Formerly from Barrhead and Neerlandia, Alberta, he passed away peacefully with loved ones at his side at the Rosedale Hospice, Calgary, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born January 13, 1917, in Zandbulten, Friesland, and married Grace Runia on June 21, 1944. He enjoyed a successful forty-nine year career as a Mechanic. Henry and Grace immigrated to Canada in 1953 with three children and settled in Barrhead, Alberta, where two sons were added to the family. From 1965 to the present they resided in Calgary, except for a seven year period when he owned and operated Meetsma Motors in Neerlandia, Alberta. Active by faith and in deed, he helped build and served on council in the Christian Reformed Church. Henry will be sadly missed by his beloved wife of fifty-three years, Grace; their children and spouses, Gerald (Elizabeth) of Edmonton, Arnold (Emmy) of Calgary, Patricia (Jerry) VanderWal of Victoria, Henry (Margaret) of Morinville, and Richard of Calgary. He is also survived by his twelve grandchildren, Marilyn (Al), Michael (Brenda), Bryan (Emily), Jason, Sharlene (David), Arend, Matthew, Christopher, Stephen, Angela, DJ and Petra; and two great-grandchildren, David and Chantel. (10/3/97) NEWSOME _ Mary Newsome, cherished mother of Evelene Newsome of Calgary, Fred (Lucy) of Westcott, and Peter (Susan), and Ken (Linda) both of Cremona, passed away peacefully with her four children holding her, on September 27, 1997, at the age of 84. Over the years Mary won many hard fought battles against asthma but lost her last fight to cancer. Grandma will be missed by Janene (Brock) Martin, James (Andrea) Watson, Laurie (Ernie) Steen, Dale (Judi) Newsome, Kevin, Robert, Tim, Shawn, Steven, and Brandice Newsome, and "old Grandma" (Great) to Shaun, Sheldon, Joel, Dakota, and Levi. She is survived by her twin sister Elna Miller and brother Norman (Margaret) Jensen, both of Calgary; her stepson Norman Newsome of Drayton Valley; step-grandchildren, Darrell, Diana and David; nieces, Karen Denby and Judy Carruther; and nephew Victor Jensen. Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband Frank in 1974, brother Verner in 1977, mother Karen in 1940, and father Peter in 1961. She was born February 6, 1913 on the location of the Spyhill Jail and spent her youth in the Westminster district. After her marriage to Frank in January 1941, they resided in Bearspaw district where they raised their four children. They moved to Cremona in 1965 and then retired to Calgary in 1972. Mary was an active member of altruistic groups in all areas she resided. She and her twin Elna were lifetime members of the Thorncliffe-Greenview Community where they spent hundreds of hours as volunteers and enjoying Bingo and the wonderful companionship of the Thorncliffe Seniors. She also bowled until health problems prevented her participation. Mary will also be missed by her many friends and acquaintances and remembered for her joy of life, her kind, gentle and never complaining personality, her great sense of humour which she maintained to the end. (10/2/97) SIKORSKI _ Joseph Sikorski of Maple Ridge, B.C., passed away September 30, 1997 at the age of 64 years, after a brief struggle with cancer. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Ann; daughter Candace (John Suk) of Richmond, B.C.; his son Trevor (Geraldine) of London, England; his mother Dora Bancarz of Calgary; and many other relatives and friends. Joe was born in Wynyard, SK, and lived in Calgary for over thirty years. He was involved in the energy industry having worked for Amoco Canada. Later on he started Sikorski Seismic until retiring five years ago. Memorial Service Saturday, October 4 at 11:00 a.m., Northside Chapel, Port Coquitlam, B.C. (10/3/97) SONDERGAARD _ Reg. No. 14695 Sondergaard, Arne (Sandy) retired RCMP officer, passed away suddenly at his residence. He was born November 25, 1923, Holstbro (Hjerm) Denmark. Sandy is survived by his loving wife Myrtle and three sons, Arne Jr. of Bethel, Alaska, Bruce and Nicole of Ottawa, Mark and Carla of Calgary; and daughter-in-law Janet Sondergaard of Calgary. He was predeceased by his youngest son Donald in 1986, his parents, Lars Christian and Bodil, and brothers, Chris, Svend, Ernest and Andrew. Sandy is also survived by his special grandchildren, Kevin of Calgary, Lis and Kim of Ottawa, Jason of Calgary; sisters, Else of Denmark, Inger of Warner, Alberta; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sandy began his career with the RCMP Regina Training Depot, and Rockcliff, Ontario. After numerous postings in Saskatchewan and Alberta he retired after twenty-five years of service in 1970. Sandy also worked for Atco Structures and the Corp of Commissionaires in Calgary. After retirement he spent his new life enjoying his grandchildren, yard, travelling and socializing with his numerous friends. "Sandy" was a very special person who touched people in so many wonderful ways. He will be deeply missed but, we all know that he will be with us in our hearts always. Rest in peace Sandy! He is survived by his loving wife Janny (Jean) Torensma of Calgary; his sister Nellie Boonstra of Holland; his four children, Peter and Sjaan Torensma of Holland, Annet and Kees Den Boer of Penhold, Grace and Art Vandenberg of Cochrane, and Henry and Donna Torensma of Calgary.
