(9/28/97) BOESCH _ Mr. Merle Lawrence Boesch, beloved husband of Mrs. Isobel Boesch of Calgary, passed away at the Cross Bow Auxiliary Hospital on September 24, 1997 at the age of 76 years. Merle and Isobel were married in 1941, after which Merle served in the Air Force until 1945. The family farmed in Riceton, Saskatchewan until 1974 when Merle's health forced him to retire. He and Isobel then moved to Calgary in 1987 to be closer to their daughters. Merle was a founding member of the Western Canada Farm Progress Show in Regina, Saskatchewan, and was a life member of the Kiwanis. Besides his loving wife, Merle is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Jaster and Don Craig, and Robin and Ross Waldo, all of Calgary; as well as two granddaughters, Tara and Lloyd Kortbeek, and Tammy Berglund-Jaster. He was predeceased by his father in 1960, and his mother in 1989. She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her children, Albert (Irene) Graham of Calgary, Henry Graham of Calgary, Wilma (Doug) Betts of Toronto, Ont., Gloria Sullivan of Calgary, Grace (Guy) Sanderson of Calgary, and Harold (Norma) Graham of Calgary. Dorothy had twelve grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Bill on May 13, 1997 and her son Jim on April 13, 1983. Dorothy moved to Calgary in 1941. Dorothy was a very devoted mother always making sure her family was well cared for. All needs were met if possible by her. Her children will always remember how she put her family first before herself. She devoted her whole life to her family. Dorothy worked very hard in bringing up her family. Shirley is survived by her sister Olive McCuaid of Burnaby, B.C.; her daughter Joan (Ron) McKenzie of Calgary, AB; her son James (Paula) Kenney of Kingston, ON; her granddaughter Deardra of Calgary; and her grandson David of Victoria, B.C. Her loving and generous spirit will be sadly missed by her many lifelong friends including Dorothy and Chris; her extended family of staff, volunteers and residents of Carewest Sarcee, O.E.S. Meikle-Harris C.M., Christine Campbell, at the age of 88 years, passed away at the Rockyview Hospital on Friday evening, September 26, 1997. She was predeceased by her husband Anthony E. Harris in 1987, her first husband William McMunn Meikle in 1979, her son Malcolm James Meikle in March of 1997, and her three brothers, Malcolm, James and Tom many years ago. Christine is survived by her children, Robert David Meikle (Barbara) of Calgary, Peggie Shaw (Bob) of Ladysmith, B.C., Christine Herman (Cliff) of Calgary, Lenore Gilfillan (Richard) of Calgary, William Lyle Meikle (Cheryl) of Salmon Arm, B.C., Audrey O'Neil of Calgary, Roderick Meikle of Calgary; her daughter-in-law Gerry Meikle of Water Valley; two sisters, Rena Gilmour-Westlund (Emile) of Calgary and Jessie McNichol (Alec) of Scotland; twenty-two grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. Christine was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1908. She immigrated to Canada in 1927 continuing her nurses training in Montreal and moving to Calgary in 1928. She met and married Bill Meikle in Calgary, they were married on September 2, 1929. When Christine's youngest, a set of twins were born in 1946 it was soon discovered that Roddy had Down's Syndrome. From that point on Christine dedicated her life to the advancement of the mentally handicapped and subsequently the Calgary Association for Retarded Children was formed and is known today as the Developmental Disabilities Resource Centre. Dr. Meikle-Harris received numerous recognitions for her outstanding work. Among those were the Calgary's Citizen of the Year in 1960; a Centennial Medal during 1968; and Honorary Doctorate Degree from the University of Calgary on November 6, 1971; the Order of Canada in December of 1973; the Alberta Achievement Award for outstanding service in Special Education presented in November of 1980 by the Premier, The Right Honorable Peter Lougheed; a Centennial Award in 1987 and just recently was recognized by the Calgary Developmental Disabilities Resource Centre. The family wishes to express their appreciation for the care our Mother received at the Scottish Extendicare Nursing Home these past few years and the staff on Unit 73 at the Rockyview Hospital this past week. (9/28/97) MacFARLANE _ Esther Miriam MacFarlane of Calgary passed away peacefully at the Bethany Care Centre on September 26, 1997 at the age of 90 years. Esther will be lovingly remembered by two sons, Ted (Sylvia) Walker of Regina, Frank Walker of Bethany Care Centre, Calgary and daughter Bev (Pat) Whitney of Calgary. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ken (Grace) Hegler of Vancouver, and George Hegler of Victoria; several nieces and nephews. Esther was predeceased by her first husband Lynwood Walker in 1955 and by her second husband Charles MacFarlane in 1966, sister Berniece Hollinshead in 1986. She has lived in Calgary since 1955, most recently at the Bethany Care Centre (about eighteen years). (9/28/97) McCARTY _ A Golden Heart Stopped Beating Two Working Hands At Rest May 13, 1896 - September 24, 1997 Barbara, at the age of 101, passed away peacefully at the Beverly Centre where she had been a resident for the past five and a half years. Born in Calumet, Michigan, Barbara arrived at Rosalind, Alberta in 1902 with her father George McTavish and her five siblings. She married James Blanchard McCarty in 1917 and they farmed at Kelsey, Alberta for many years, moving to Calgary in 1946. Barbara was a very special, loving, caring person who always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she met. Her gentleness and great sense of humor will be dearly remembered by her family and friends. She is survived by her daughters, Helen Atkinson of Edmonton and Blanche (Lindsay) Cuthbertson of Calgary; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. Barbara was predeceased by her loving husband Blanchard forty years ago, daughter Velma LaBarge Carter, son James, son-in-law Ralph Atkinson, granddaughter Bonnie Atkinson and granddaughter-in-law Becky Cuthbertson. The family would like to thank all of the staff, especially the nurses, at Beverly Centre for the gentle loving care given to Barbara. (9/28/97) ONESPOT _ Frank (Ji-Ji Mu'za, Berry Child) Onespot, of Tsuu T'ina Nation passed away peacefully at the Rockyview Hospital on September 26, 1997 at the age of 97 years. Frank worked here in Calgary at the stock yards for many years as well as at the logging camp at Tsuu T'ina Nation. As a carpenter, Frank constructed homes for many people both on and off the Reserve. Frank loved his music, this was shown through his ability to play the violin, steel guitar and harmonica. Frank and his wife Mary travelled extensively throughout Europe in the 1960's as traditional native dancers and goodwill ambassadors. His native heritage was always a very important part of his life, this was evident by his involvement in the Calgary Stampede, and as a cultural teacher at Plains Indian Survival School. He was a key leader in many groups and societies such as being Chief of the Prairie Chicken Society, Cowboy Society, Whip Society and the keeper of Tsuu T'ina Nation's Holy Ceremonial Bundle. Frank was one of the founders of the Tsuu T'ina Indian Days and Pow Wows. He was an avid hunter, fisher and trapper. Because of Frank's age and as the eldest member of Tsuu T'ina, his presence will always be felt by the knowledge he passed on to every one and he will be known as the Grandfather to his people. Frank is survived by his loving family, three sons, Reggie and Patsy Onespot, Arthur and Lottie Onespot, Fred and Eliza Eagle Tail; four daughters, Evelyn and Tom Big Plume, Agnes Thomas, Mae and Gib McDonald, and Lottie Devine; two adopted sons, Frank Renteria and Pat Derranger; and three generations of grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Lucy and Dick Big Plume, Mrs. Victoria McHugh of Gleichen, Alberta and Mrs. Joyce Runge of Priddis, Alberta; two sisters-in-law, Rosie Runner and Monica Whitney; and his special nephew, Chief Roy Whitney as well as numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives. Frank was predeceased by his wife Mary in August 1992, parents, John and Susan Onespot, two daughters, Olive Golar and Marjorie Onespot, three brothers, Roy, Bill and Lawrence Whitney, one sister Maggie Onespot, sister-in-law Mae Whitney, three brothers-in-law, George Runner, Clarence McHugh and Roy Runge. Special thanks to his daughter Lottie for all the care she provided to him. (9/28/97) TEBB _ Albert Clifford Tebb of Airdrie passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital on September 23, 1997 at the age of 79 years. Cliff was born at Gerald, Saskatchewan and came to Airdrie with his parents at nine months old. Left to mourn his loss is his loving wife Olive; one son Wayne and wife Sandra; three grandsons, Greg, Brian and Barry; one granddaughter Shannon; numerous nieces and nephews; one brother Harry and wife Gloria from Nanaimo; two sisters, Marianne Hawkey and Lillian Schofield both from Airdrie. Predeceased by his daughter Marilyn in 1966 and one son Donald in 1997. He was active in the community winning the Provincial Grain Judging in 1938 - Hamilton, Ontario. Managing the Rodeo and being Parade Marshall for many years. He was a member of Crossfield Lodge AF & AM, Airdrie Lions Club, life member of Crossfield Elks; also life member of Airdrie Curling Club and an ardent curler. Cliff was in the trucking business for thirty years as well as being a successful farmer. He had a good eye for livestock and bought and sold many a good horse. Cliff was very proud of his grandsons being involved in Rodeo and helping on the farm. Cliff loved a good joke and one reminded him of another. Cliff retired in 1981 with his wife Olive and has lived in Croxford Estates until his death.
