War Dog Memorial by Anthony Quickle, Quickle Sculpture Studios

Shown are photos of "Guardians" a War Dog Memorial located in the Village of Streamwood, Illinois (suburban Chicago). The monument is a life-size bronze stylized depiction of a German Shepherd military working dog / K-9 and his handler. It was dedicated during Memorial Day activities in Streamwood's Veterans Memorial Park. The dedication ceremony included speeches by Congressman Henry Hyde and Vietnam Dog Handler Association President, John Burnham, memorial wreaths laid by members of US Army Airborne divisions, a special K-9 KIA memorial by members of VietNow, and a pass in review by members of 40 K-9 units from the surrounding states. The most moving part of the day was watching the huge crowd stand patiently & reverently in pouring rain & hail for a chance to see and touch the sculpture.

Since the memorial was dedicated in May 2001, it has been featured in newspapers around the USA, and on the covers of both "Dogman" the official publication of the VDHA, and in the annual K9 issue of "Tiger Flight" the official publication of the US Air Force Security Police Association, as well as the featured design element of the Village of Streamwood Vehicle Decals for 2003-2005. Additionally, the sculptor of this monument has since won the International Design Competition to design and sculpt the Vietnam Dog Handlers Association's "United States National War Dog Memorial"
