STORY BEHIND THE POEM UMBRELLA BOYS
.

It was a typical Vancouver evening, meaning that it was raining hard enough to drown fish.  Derek and Andrew were working together on a foot beat in the Downtown-Eastside (aka Skid Road).  This is the scene of the infamous Vancouver open air drug market.  A very dangerous area to say the least.

.

We have short Gortex patrol jackets which are completely waterproof, but they are short, so the water beads up and drips onto your legs and backside.  Some of us “old” guys have knee length rain coats, but Derek and Andrew are junior enough that they don’t have one and can’t get one.

.

As they were walking up the street, they spied a shopping cart full of junk, including a couple of umbrellas.  Being enterprising young lads, they picked them up, opened them up and voila, instant dry.

.

Unfortunately, an Inspector happened to be driving by and observed them.  The following day on roll call, the Inspector dropped by and mentioned seeing the two beat guys.  Our Sergeant immediately piped up, “it must have been the other squad, nobody on our squad would do anything as silly as that”.  At that point Derek turned beet red.  It took some wheedling and cajoling, but the two finally fessed up to being the Umbrellla Boys and the poem was born.
