On November 15, 2007, Southwest Area Square and Round Dance Association lost a strong longtime member and leader, and Texas Star Reporter, Johnny Kopecky, due to cancer. Johnny and Bobbie have been members over 30 years and Round Dance instructors nearly 30 years. Johnny and Bobbie started the Sun Dancers Round Dance Club in 1981. Johnny cued for various square dance clubs in El Paso, and guest cued throughout the area. Johnny and Bobbie were responsible for the association name change in the late '80s. Over the years, they held all of the officer positions in SWASDA and/or CATA (Callers and Teachers Association), with the past several years being president or vice president until July 2007. At a time when several El Paso square dance clubs were ceasing to be, Johnny and Bobbie were highly instrumental in keeping their home square dance club active to later merge with another square dance club to become the only square dance club in El Paso, See Saw Squares / Star Dusters. Square Dancing was frequently on Johnny's mind, even a few days before he went to be with our Lord.
