KRAKATOA

In 1883 Krakatoa erupted and produced one of the greatest explosions ever witnessed. Krakatoa island was in the straight between Java and Sumantra in Indonesia. It was the remnant of a prehistoric volcano and was about 6Km wide. When it blew its top on the 27th of August, the blast had a TNT equvalent of about 100 megatons and could be heard 2000Km away in Australia. 5 cubic miles of debris were produced and settled over an area of 300 000 squared miles. The dust cloud blocked out the sunlight plunging Jakarta (100 miles away) into complete darkness, producing brilliant red sunsets for years afterwards aswell as dropping the earth`s mean annual temperature by a few degrees. The tsunami (giant wave) produced by the blast rose to about 40m and drowned 36 000 people in the near by coastal towns. The sea waves and atmospheric pressure changes were noticed on the other side of the globe. After the eruption very little of the island was left and was replaced by a 300m deep water coverd basin. This is not the end though as after 40 quiet years new volcanic activity started which has produced Anak (child of) Krakatoa, now at a height of 300m.
