The Assassination Game

Since the fall of Carlos "The Jackal," arrested in France in the late 20th century, the assassin market in Europe has been a chaotic one. Reliable assassins are good commodities, and a secretive effort was begun to clean up the market once and for all. To eliminate the glut of two-bit assassins and allow the survival of the fittest to determine the ultimate successor, the underbelly of Europe and Africa were scoured to find candidates to be the next super-assassin, to be code named "The Beaver." These candidates were be forced to play a very real, and very lethal, version of "The Assassination Game," or T.A.G. for short, where survival is the only rule.

Some have speculated that this was the work of The Body, one of their last actions before contact was lost. Or maybe, it was the UN with an ulterior motive of having most of the assassins kill each other off, leaving one last weary one to bring down themselves. It may just be the Corporations, looking for a reliable product.

In any case, your task is merely survival at this point. You were given a contract on another assassin, while at the same time, a contract was placed on you. The only way to be safe is to follow the chain all the way around, eliminating the competition, until you are left holding a contract with your own name -- the name of "The Beaver!"

The winners chart

The following ASCII graphic tries to convey how the kills happened in TAG. A line going out from a player name up or down indicates a kill. The dead assassin is at the end of the arrow. This chart also reveals core and assassin names.

Despite our concerns there was only one mutual elimination (The Searcher and Torcher EM). Three players were disqualified (DQ) for errors in their decks or failure to play; two had to withdraw (WD). Note that DQs did not give pelts.

So, for example, this chart shows that N/A Rave killed Leafweir, who had previously killed Artful Dodger who had previously killed Damian. The deepest kill chain is 5.

How to Play Beaver T.A.G.

Signup must be done in advance. The match-ups will be secret, you will only know whom you are hunting but not who is hunting you. Only one entry per person, even if you have multiple characters. To enter, send MIT Beaver your character name, character ID, Station name,ICQ number (if you don't have ICQ, click here to download it for free), and Beaver-ized assassin code name (i.e., make up a Beaver-related name not already in use -- it should not reflect your real character's name). MIT Beaver's ICQ number is 3632609.

The tournament is single-elimination. You lose, you're out. Corpses do not get second chances. At any given time, you will be hunting exactly one other assassin and exactly one assassin will be hunting you. This will not be the same person unless you are the last two left. But then again, you won't know that until it's too late, will you?

When you spot your target in the Core, challenge him or her by whispering the following:

<TAG>

You gain one "pelt" for each win. If your target refuses to accept a challenge, he or she forfeits and you automatically gain a "pelt."

If a draw is reported, the assassin with more "pelts" wins on the basis of experience, but does not gain another "pelt". If each assassin has the same number of "pelts," then both are eliminated as they kill each other off simultaneously. (If the last two assassins draw and have the same number of "pelts", they will replay.)

Match results should be given via ICQ only to MIT Beaver (#3632609), who will keep track of the tournament progress. MIT Beaver will inform the appropriate party of his or her new target after the match. If the hunter wins, then (s)he is now hunting the target's target, if the target wins, then the hunter's hunter now hunts the target. Confused yet? There's more: in the event of a double elimination, the hunter's hunter now hunts the target's target.

Please note that it is to your advantage to play as often as possible, as long as you win! The more "pelts" you have, the more likely you are to win a prize and the more likely you are to survive in the case of a draw. Aggression can be your friend...

Since assassins need to be sneaky, the following cards are banned:

  • Any mobile asset with Stealth of 1
  • Any card that can generate a mobile asset with Stealth of 1 (Womb Array, Aaron Kofler, etc.) -- note that Uplift can still be used
  • Armored HQ and Military HQ
  • Any Intervention requiring only Military resources

GA-furnished prizes will be given to the winner and the runner-up. A special prize for most "pelts" is being sponsored by Kraken's Trading Post, an officially approved Genetic Anomalies Bit Broker. Visit Kraken's Trading Post to purchase specific cards you need.

Rules

  1. Contest sign-up begins November 27 and ends November 30. The contest period runs December 1 and runs until there is only one assassin left or until no kills are reported for a 24-hour period. If more than one assassin remains, those who have not reported in for the longest amount of time will be eliminated by MIT Beaver until a final victor can be determined. To summarize: you must make a reasonable attempt to be present and to hunt your target.
  2. You must accept all T.A.G. challenges or you will forfeit the match and be eliminated.
  3. You may only "TAG" your target with your registered assassin character.
  4. You may only "TAG" your target's registered assassin character.
  5. All games are to be played in Europe. Skill games, please.
  6. The "hunter" gets the first move in each game.
  7. The following cards are banned (use will result in forfeit):
    • Any mobile asset with Stealth of 1
    • Any card that can generate a mobile asset with Stealth of 1
    • Armored HQ or Military HQ and Siege Bunker
    • Any Intervention requiring only Military resources
  8. Time limit in each match is 20 turns (not minutes).
  9. You will receive one "pelt" for each match you win, unless you win by tiebreaker or disqualification.
  10. In the event of a draw, the player with the most "pelts" wins. If both players have an equal number of "pelts," they are both eliminated unless they are the last two players, in which case they replay with random play first.
  11. Prizes will go to:
    • The winner
    • The runner(s)-up
    • The player(s) other than the winner and runner(s)-up with the most "pelts."
