CD3 Discography

        A Discography of US-issued CD3 titles
                       V. 1.5

               Last update: 11/08/96

[This is a *fifth* attempt at generating a discography of all CD3 titles
ever issued in the US. I've listed all the titles I either own (the majority
listed) or else have signifcant detail on (e.g. artist & release number.]

 ============================================================================

Judging by discographies and questions I've seen posted to the net
over the years, I suspect there are a lot of people who don't know about
these releases and who will be interested in adding them to personal
 discographies, want lists, etc.

I know a number of titles are absent from this list. If you have
detailed information on titles missing from this list, I would be very
interested in obtaining them. Information of importance:

      Artist
      Release number
      Label
      Date issued (if known)
Format (original packaging, e.g. short "L-card", long "L-card",
snap pack, long blister pak, etc.)
      Tracks
CSIG number (printed on label for discs made by Columbia pressing plant)
Whether it is a promo-only title.

Note that I am ONLY intersted in US-issued CD3 titles.
Assuming I get significant input, an updated list will be posted in
 the future.

After posting previous versions of the discography, I received information
from the following individuals, whose contributions are greatly
appreciated (listed in no particular order):

                   Introduction to the CD3:

Although many people think that CD singles are a very recent
phenomenon in the US, the truth is that the first commercially issued
CD singles in this country appeared back in 1987.

The common misperception arises from the fact that for the first
couple of years, CD singles were primarily issued in the widely
overlooked 3" format (CD3). So widely overlooked, in fact, that
the CD3 format now stands as one of the more resounding format
flops of the modern era. This despite the fact that most of the
major labels issued superstar titles in this form, and the fact that
the world's largest record/software company--Sony--poured significant
money and effort into promoting the format.

And yet, most people own not a single domestic title in the format.
As a result, the format only survived on the retail shelves of
this country (aside from a few novelty issues) for somewhat less than two
years (by-and-large 1988 to mid-1989), with very few copies of most titles
sold. Possible reasons for the failure include the fact that at the
time they were first issued, most CD players required a cumbersome
adapter be used to play them (almost all players made after 1988
play them without an adaptor); and the fact that at the time, the
$4-8 that these singles/EPs retailed for seemed high in relation to
vinyl and tapes, which together then still commanded the majority
of the market.

The CD3 format was a bit more successful in Europe, where it survived
until the early '90's, and in Japan, where titles were issued
in the CD3 format until at least the mid '90's.

With a very few novelty exceptions (e.g. the Nine Inch Nails CD3), there
haven't been any domestic (US) CD3 title in seven years, and most retail
stores haven't carried any titles in at least that long. If you know
of a store that does carry CD3s, they're almost certainly imports.

If you're a collector, and you happen upon any interesting domestic
(US) CD3 titles, you should consider purchasing them immediately.
CD3s are almost certain to become among the most desirable commercially-issued
titles of the CD era. Primary reasons include:

1) They were pressed in small quantites and they sold poorly (with
unsold copies presumably returned to the manufacturer and destroyed).

2) With only a small number of exceptions, few or no promo copies were
issued for most CD3 titles. For small press runs, promo copies frequenly
outnumber stock copies. Since there were no promos, there may be
only an extremely small number of existing copies of some titles.
This is especially true of titles issued in 1989 (by which time
many stores had stopped carrying CD3's).

3) Many of the CD3 titles included non-LP tracks. Some of these have never
   been reissued on CD.

4) A variety of packaging styles were used for the CD3's. One style is
of particular note: The "L card". In this package, the sleeve for the
CD3 was actually attached to the "longcard". One would tear along
the perforations to remove the sleeve. CD3s by some highly
collectable artists were issued in this format: Madonna, Traveling
Wilburys, etc. I'd suspect that there are few such "L card"
packs still in the perforation-not-torn state.

5) The total number of CD3 titles issued in the US was small--probably
   around 450.

               Alphabetical Compilation of CD titles:

Where the track listing is known, titles are given following the
entry. If the artist and release number are known, but the track
listing is not, a question mark (?) appears in place of the title listing.
Promo-only titles are given a "-Promo" suffix in the release number
column. All others are commercial titles. In some cases, I have noted
non-LP tracks by the designation "NonLP". But I have not been very
 diligent about this.
