This is the Himeji Pagoda. It is a Buddhist sanctuary. Inside the building are enshrined a portion of Buddha's ashes/remains. I think there are seven locations in the world that have a portion of Buddha's ashes.

The main statue on the upper portion of the wall is of Buddha. The other statues on the same level are of his great ten followers/disciples.
This is the top of the dome.
Along the base of the inside wall are statues of various Buddhist saints.
