Currently the subject of an impressive restoration project by Christiaan Vanhee of Leopoldsburg, is a Ju 88 A-4 that he acquired as a wreck from Russia in 1996.
This aircraft, w/nr 08814160, belonged to 1 Gruppe of KG 30 and crashed east of Petsamo air base on December 2, 1642, due to an engine fire. So far Christiaan and six other enthusiasts have gathered together the cockpit section, two Jumo 211 engines (both badly damaged), both undercarriage legs, ailerons, flaps, wing panels and other wing components-the group members are still attempting to secure the wings.
Long-term plans envisage a 15-year restoration to static condition and as an aid to this, the group has been in contact with the Verkhur und Technik Museum in Berlin, Germany, and the Norwegian Aviation Museum in Bodø, Norway, both of which are also restoring Ju 88s.
The group exhibited its Ju 88 at Deurne Airfield in Belgium on May 21/24 as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations of the airfield in response to an invitation from the Aviation Society of Antwerp. This airfield was known to the RAF as 'B70' during World War Two and was used by KG 3 flying Do 17 and Do 215 aircraft during the Battle of Britain, this unit went on to flying Ju 88s during the Russian Campaign.--Flypast September 1998
