The Schaub Name ...

The name Schaub comes from the Italian "giuppa", the French "joupe", and the Mid-high German "Shoup" (Schoubes).

From these roots comes the name Schaub and also the related name of Joppe.

The name Schaub and its variations have developped from several roots and are not necessarily related. The other spellings are Schaup, Schaupp, Schäuble, Schaible, Scheuble, Schäublin, Schäubli, Schaab, Schawb, Schout, Schoup.

The meaning of SCHAUB in several regions of Germany:

In Saxony, "die Schaube" was a short overcoat worn by women farmers. In the Augsburg region, it meant a woman's complete outer garment.

According to Albert Heinze in "Deutsche Familiennamen." (1922 Halle/Saale) "Schaube", in Mid-high German "Schoube", "Schube", means a long, wide, outer dress, or tunic.

According to Carl Gunther Ludovici in "Grosses volständiges Universallexikon", published in 1734 in Halle and Lepzig by Verlag Johann Heinrich Zedler, "Schaube" around 1460, meant " a wide, pleated fur-lined frock coat, open at the front." Later in the 16 hundreds it meant a wrap (shawl) worn by men. In the 17 hundreds it meant an official robe worn by lawyers or university officials.

A "Schaub" or a "Schau(ner) was a man who made these robes.

In the South and South-west of Germany, "der Schaub" was a bundle of straw, according to Prof. Josef Karlman Brechenmacher, in "Deutsches Namensbuch."

"Der Strohwisch" (whisk of Straw) was a symbol of the law, symbolising taking possession or seizing by law. Even today, a "Whisk of Straw" indicates that a road, for example, is closed to traffic.

Inn Keepers also used the Whisk of straw as their symbol.

A "Schaubhut" is a strawhat.

"Der Schaup, des Schaubes" can also be a symbol for a retailer of wine.
