MullenHigh School |
Established in 1909, Mullen High School added the 11th and 12th grades in 1914. In 1965, the town constructed a new junior-senior high next to its 1928 building, razing the town's original 1917 high school. Originally called Hooker County High, Mullen consolidated the county's rural schools in 1954.
Currently, it draws students from portions of Thomas and Cherry counties. Over the years, the Mullen Broncos have won a number of state championships in Sand greens golf, wrestling, football, and track. (Nebraska High School Historical Society 413)
It would make sense that Mullen is the county seat of Hooker County, since it is that county's only town. In 1877, the North and Cody Ranch was founded by a commander of Pawnee Scouts named Frank North and by Buffalo Bill (Wilson 285).
Over the last two census reports, Mullen's population dropped by 23 percent, from 720 to 554 (Nebraska Blue Book 817). Hooker County has a little more than a person per square mile (863). Here we find the headwaters of the Dismal River (which is the title of my first book of poems).
