(2) Elizabeth Catesby b. 1681, Castle Hedingham, Essex, d. 4 Mar 1755, Williamsburg, VA, (daughter of John and Elizabeth (Jekyll) Catesby). Elizabeth was the sister of Mark Catesby, the famous Naturalist. William came to this country in the middle of the 18th century from Co. Suffolk. He entered Queen’s College, Cambridge, in 1688, where he took his medical degree in 1693, and was entered to a Fellowship, in 1694. He had been Secretary of State for some time when he was recommended (1713) by Governor Spotswood to be appointed as a member of the Council. [VA Mag. 2. Elizabeth Catesby Cocke b. 29 Aug 1701,Sudbury, Suffolk, England, d. 11 Mar 1762, Northumberland Co., VA, m. (2) 14 Feb 1725, in VA, to Thomas Jones, Col., b. London, England, d. 21 May 1757, Hanover Co., VA, (son of Capt. Roger and Dorothy (Walker) Jones). Thomas was a vestryman of Bruton Parish; member of House of Burgesses for the College of William & Mary 1720-1722; and member of the First Board of Alderman.

3. Thomas Jones, II b. 25 Dec 1726, Hanover Co., VA d. 1785/86, Spring Garden, Hanover Co., VA, m. Sally Skelton b. ca. 1730, Hanover Co., VA, d. 1785, Spring Garden, Hanover Co., VA, (daughter of James and Jane (Meriwether) Skelton, MD). Thomas was the Clerk of Northumberland County until 1781, when he removed to Spring Garden, where he died. He lived in the most expensive style, and his splendid residence at Spring Garden, was adorned with paintings from England by noted artists. We learn from correspondence with George Turberville about the marriage of Tom’s son, Catesby Jones, with Lettice Turberville, George’s daughter, that his clerkship was worth L400 a year, which he proposed to turn over to Catesby. Thomas and Sally also owned, Mt. Zion, Northumberland Co., VA.

George and Anne (DeBell) Millan). George was Chief Justice of Fairfax Co., VA. Their daughters received $139.50 from the sale of slaves owned by John T. Lee, dec., [Lee vs. Lee CFF #98Y (1846)]. In 1854, George had a store on the Little River Turnpike, with Benjamin Spindle. He lived a mile from Centreville until 1859, when he moved to Alexandria around 1 Aug 1859. [Spindle vs. Gooding CFF #84FF (1859)]. Apparently, George had relations with one of his slaves named, Eliza Horton, mulatto, for on 31 Dec 1876, a William Horton, 23, colored, son of George W. Millan, white, and Eliza Horton, mulatto, married Hester Brooks. [Marriage Certificate, Fairfax Co., VA].

Col. Francis Waring was a Justice, vestryman and Burgess for Essex Co., VA 1758-1764. He later inherited Goldberry and purchased Mahockney with 1,154 acres near Mount Landing in Essex as a gift for his nephew, William Catesby Latane. Col. Warner signed Richard Henry Lee’s (another of our ancestors), celebrated protest against the Stamp Act in 1765. His will was dated 31 Oct 1770, prov. 21 Oct 1771, gives son Thomas Gouldman the land he lives on; son William the tract bought of Samuel Thompson and William Meggott named Cockeland and next to land of Samuel Henshaw and Henry Garnett, and his lot No. 3 in Beaufort Town; son Henry land bought of Augustine Brougham’s Estate, next to that of Theophilus Travers, Griffin Brougham and Wm. Waring and his lot No. 5 in Beaufort town. Grist mill to be sold to pay his debts….Rest of estate to be divided by daus. In 1861 he enlisted in the SC CSA as a surgeon to Company A, first South Carolina Rifles, commanded by Capt. William Livingston. Soon after, at Sandy springs (Anderson Co., SC) he was detailed by Col. James L. Orr to the medical staff of his regiment ("Orr's rifles") for the duration of the war. He founded the Fairfax County Medical Society and became its first President.

Spencer was a member of the House of Burgesses in 1764, and a signer of the Westmoreland Assn. Address of 1766. He served as vestryman of St. Stephen’s Parish like his father before him.

Robert “Councillor” and Frances Ann (Tasker) Carter, III). Both Spencer and Elizabeth are buried at Portici, which occupies a portion of the battlefield of Manassas. [See write up of Portici]. Portici was also known as Lewis House, so called from Frank Waring Lewis, his grandson.

George was a ranger with Mosby during the Civil War. He served as a private in Company A, 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry, and his Nickname was “The Bantam Rooster” due to his small size and agility. George was a lawyer after the war in Centreville.
