Jeremiah died 23-Dec-1824, Canisteo, Steuben Co., New York. Jeremiah Baker, Sr. was born in New England, married Anna Stephens, sister of Rev. Jedediah Stephens, of Caanan, Conn. Mr. Baker was a soldier through the entire revoluntionary war, his family living at Wyoming. While residents of Wyoming the mother and children where taken prisoners, but were soon after rescued. He lost all his property there, his buildings being burned at the time of the battle of Wyoming. The family removed to Tioga Point, Pa., but soon after came to Canisteo by means of boats and canoes, arriving here in the fall of 1790. He settled first one mile from the Asa Baker place and moved upon the latter farm before the year 1800. Mr. Baker was one of the seven voters of the town for four years, and held various offices in the early history of the town. He died in 1824 and his wife in 1825. Anna: Anna was stricken blind when attacked in her cabin by Indians (Shades of Death). The Indians because of superstition left her alone and took her and her children captive. They had nine children. He died 12-23-1824 and she less than a year later having never entirely recovering her sight. (Massacre of Wyoming).

Richard: Richard Crosby was a soldier of the revolution and was also ensign of the first military company formed in this county. He was with his father when he first visited the Canisteo Valley and was one of the party which followed the Cohocton to its upper waters.

Jedediah Stephens and Abigail Corey) died 22-Nov-1871, Canisteo, Steuben Co., New York. Jeremiah Baker, Jr. was born about a mile above the present residence of his son, Asa Baker, and is said to have been the first white male child born in Steuben County. At the age of nineteen he married Eunice Powers, of Addison, who died in 1829, leaving seven children. He married second, Hila Stephens. Mr. Baker's life was spent mostly as a farmer, yet as a citizen he was intimately connected with many of the most important local improvements of his town and county. He held almost every position within the gift of his townsmen, and was deputy sheriff under the first sheriff of the county, General George McClure, and represented his assembly district in the legislature in 1835. He served on the Niagara frontier under Genral McClure in the War of 1812. Two of his sons, Nathan S. and Elias, served in the War of 1861. Hila: Her father, Rev. Jedediah Stephens, played a major roll in the founding of the Canisteo Valley. Afer her first husband, Phineas Stephens, passed away in 1825, she remarried Jeremiah Baker, Jr.

Stanton) Occupation: Carpenter and Soldier, died 4-Jun-1864, Petersburg, Virginia. Eunice died 19-May-1896. Amos: Amos B. Stanton is the half-brother of Catherine "Kate" Stanton which can be found in the Stanton genealogy. "Kate" Stanton is the gr-gr-grandmother of Helen Ann (Jessup) Sawyer, the compiler of this genealogy. Amos B. Stanton's wife, Eunice Crosby is related to the family of Baker which played a dramatic part in the growth and development of both Canisteo and Hornell. Amos B. Stanton was killed in Petersburg, Virginia in the Civil War and was listed as "Killed in Action." He and his wife are buried in the cemetery at the top of the hill entering into the Baker's Gulch Rd. outside of Canisteo. He was a carpenter by trade, which business he followed until 1861, when he enlisted in the 86th N.Y. Vols., and June 16, 1864 was killed in the front at Petersburg. He held the office of first lieutenant in his company and was a fearless and true officer and soldier, always ready to come to the front in the time of battle.

John died 1952, Canisteo, Steuben Co., New York. John Sherman Stanton, tax collector of the Town of Canisteo, was born April 5, 1859 at Adrian, NY., the son of Amos B. and Eunice (Crosby) Stanton. John S. Stanton was educated in the local school at Adrian, Alfred University, and the Bay City, Michigan schools. He taught for a time, then engaged in farming for 25 years, removing to Canisteo Village in 1920. Since that time he has been in the employ of the Erie R.R. Company. Public positions: Trustee, Adrian School for several years; Justice of the Peace 4 years; Collector, Canisteo Town, 1934 to date. He married Dec. 1, 1887, Elizabeth, daughter of Daniel and Caroline (Preston) Ordway. She is a member of the Methodist Church of Canisteo. All five of their sons are members of the Masonic fraternity as was their grandfather, Lt. Amos B. Stanton.
