Pittsburgh's Moore named Batter of the Month |
|
The American League's best player of the month was
Chicago (A)'s Pinky Whitney,
who wins the award for the 1st time in his career.
Pinky pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .404 with
3 and 16 RBI while slugging .623. His season numbers
are: .305 AVG, 81 hits, 22 doubles, 8 triples and 3
homeruns, along with 29 RBI and 53 runs scored. Pittsburgh's
third baseman Terry Moore had
some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named
him the National League Batter of the Month. Terry
pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .453 with 5 and
26 RBI while slugging .779. Terry has gone 93 for 245
(.380) this season, hitting 9 taters and driving in
55 runs. He has scored 53 runs on his own. He's 1st
in the National League in batting, 6th in homeruns
and 2nd in RBI.

Arky Vaughan collects 2000th hit against Philadelphia (A) |

PHILADELPHIA (A) - New York (A)'s shortstop Arky
Vaughan already had some highlights in his career,
and today he added another one, getting his 2000th
career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Arky collected
79 homeruns and 773 RBI in 10 seasons. 'My firends
always told me that I will do it one day. I never believed
it. Good that I was wrong!' He hit a single in the
3rd off Early Wynn for number
2000.

Chicago (A)'s Johnny Pesky has great day with six hits |

PHILADELPHIA (A) - Johnny Pesky
is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his
6 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself.
His 1st hit was a double off Al Javery
in the 1st inning. A RBI triple off Jack
Hallett in the 6th inning, accounted for his 5th
hit. He had singles in the 2nd (one RBI) , in the 3rd
inning , in the 4th inning (one RBI) and in the 9th
inning (one RBI). Johnny scored 2 runs, and he collected
4 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for
him so far, as he has 54 hits in 159 at bats, resulting
in a .340 batting average. Chicago (A) improved its
record to 29-31, scoring 21 runs on 27 hits.

Philadelphia (N)'s Wyse severely injured |
|
PHILADELPHIA (N) - Philadelphia (N) is without its
right-hander Hank Wyse for at
least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a
pitch to Andy Cohen in a game
against St. Louis (N). His face showed signs of pain
immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined
him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Tricep
Tendon which will require surgery. This season Wyse
compiled an ERA of 4.32, going 3-2 in 6 starts. He
fanned 28 while giving up 51 hits in 50 innings.
