When I came on active duty my first unit was the 2nd(Howitzer) Battalion, 18th Field Artillery located at Ft Sill. The Commander was James Bates. This was in 1958. I went off to the Basic Officers Course and rejoined the unit at Ft. Lewis in 1960. LTC Bates was still the commander and Louis W Truman was the CG of the 4th ID at Ft Lewis. I stayed with the unit until receiving orders to go to Germany.
