IHS was used as the term to describe the condition in 1967 - 68, as the cause was unknown. TCP was a more defiinitive clinical term, but the cause was still unknown. Dave Huxsoll, an Army Vet, identified the parasite. The disease occurs in many parts of Africa, the Middle East, SE Asia, the Caribbean, the USA, and the Mediterranean area. Symptoms include high fever, sometimes hemorrhage from the nose, sometimes vomiting and dysentary. A brown deposit may form on the teeth and gums. Excitement, convulsions, and partial paralysis also metimes occur. The infection may sometimes remain dormant and undetected, until heat stress triggers an outbreak. Tetracycline Hydrochloride was used as a control drug, but it never seemed to eliminate the strain found in dogs that had served in 'Nam. Over 500 Vietnam service U.S. Military Working Dogs died due to pathology associated with Ehrlichiosis.
