Stella Cameron’s touching revisit to first love is a far cry from Barbara Sheridan’s magical take on Sleeping Beauty, but a love that survives the passage of time is the theme that emerged in the books I review this week.

Once and For Always

By Stella Cameron

(MIRA – May 2000, $6.99)

Anyone who grew up in a small town knows that everyone knows everything about everybody. Cameron’s done an outstanding job rendering complex characters in this sensitive portrayal of love in Tenby, Wales.

Caitlin McBride once fell in love with shy Welsh teenager, Trevor Morgan, during an exquisite innocent summer at her grandparents. Twenty years later, with her own teenager in tow, Caitlin has returned to Wales to calmly reconsider her future and her rocky marriage.

Trevor remembers the sorrow he felt when Caitlin broke their promises to love each other for always. When he sees Caitlin he rediscovers the buried emotion but of course he is no longer a child. He is a grown man, alone and determined to reclaim Caitlin’s heart.

Their love must face down the demanding obligations of Caitlin’s family and the suspicions of a village protective of their hometown boy’s heart.

This is an insightful depiction of the intricacies of small town life and the charming setting is an extra bonus.

Silver Rain

By Barbara Sheridan

(Jove – May 2000, $8.99)

For fans of paranormal romance the pickings are becoming pretty sparse, and good ones even more so.

It was with caution that I approached this Wicca /time-travel adventure. Fortunately, nothing sets up a pleasant surprise better than low expectations.

It’s 1797 New Orleans when Alain Devereaux is devastated by the death of the love of his life, Brigitte. Alain takes a chance and allows Brigitte’s nursemaid Odette Bishop to cast a sleeping spell. He will awaken when Brigitte is reborn and be allowed 30 days to renew their love or perish.

Fast forward to April 2000. For two centuries, Alain has been a suspended animation pain-in-the-behind to the female descendents of Odette.

The current keeper of Alain’s body is Danielle Curtis and she resents the naked man in the attic for the restrictions his existence has placed upon her own life. However, when Alain suddenly awakens, Danielle is forced to bury her enmity and help him find his modern day Brigitte.

Together they spot Brigitte reincarnated as the actress Cate George. Alain and Danielle must join forces to break through Cate’s cautious demeanor, but Danielle believes she might actually be undermining the pre-destined lovers.

Alain must be inculcated by residual magic from her great-great-great grandmothers spell. That must be what is fuelling Danielle’s irrational attraction for a man destined by magic to the love of his life.

In this enjoyable, perky story you will find interesting characters and unexpected plot twists. If you like magic with your romance, this is a potent mixture.
