HAM Get-togethers in India
HAMFEST INDIA

'HAMFEST' is a festival of HAMs, the largest gathering of Indian HAMs in one place, conducted every year in different cities of India since 1991.  The main objective is to create an awareness of HAM RADIO along with the the new technological skills in the field of communication.
Looking back at the history of HAMFEST, it was started in a very small way at 'Kuttikkanam', Kottayam, Kerala in 1991 by Joseph Mattappally (VU2JIM) and he was declared the HAM of the year.  The idea of organizing a get-together of needy and helpless HAMs, called 'HAMFEST' wherein all HAMs would come individually irrespective of their club or society and collectively work for the HAMFEST and with the spirit of the hobby.

Special Call Signs

Ministry of communication (WPC wing) decided to assign special call signs to all Indian HAM community to mark the celebrations,
 

  • Suffix '/C' to their call sign

  • from 2nd October 1995 to 17th November 1995 to coincide with 100 years of radio communication, major ITU events such as 'World Telecom Exhibition and Forum', 'World Radio Communication Assembly and World Radio Conference 95'
     
  • Suffix '/50' to their call sign

  • from 1 July 1997 to 30th September 1997 to coincide with celebrations of  the 50th year of Independence.
     
  • Prefix 'AT' instead of 'VU'

  • in December 1998 to coincide with a celebration of World Amateur Radio Centenary and Platinum Jubilee of Amateur Radio in India.
     
  • AT0ITU

  • VU2UR was granted with the above call sign from 17th May 1997 to 31st May 1997
    and 5th July 1997 to 27th July 1997 for the IARU HF Championship contest.
