Signed by Terry Venables at Portsmouth on a four-year deal for
£200,000 from Marconi-Fairfield, Foster was the third Aussie
to arrive at Fratton Park. A regular full Australian international,
he was persuaded by Terry Venables to try his luck in English
football. He was not short of confidence, and hit the net with
a late goal against West Brom in October and both in the 2-2 FA
Cup draw at home to Aston Villa, as well as a point-earning goal
at Sheffield United in January. It was little surprise, though,
when he was released by Pompey during the summer and it seemed
as though fortune had smiled on the Aussie again when Venables
brought him back to England for another chance. He responded with
a goal in the 4-1 drubbing of Portsmouth at Selhurst Park in November
'98.
Craig joined Palace at the end of September 1998 on a free, after a lengthy wait for his work permit. It was at Portsmouth that Foster caught the eye, with some great midfield performances, notably against Aston Villa in the FA Cup, and he continued his fine form for Australia in the World Cup qualifying campaign despite them not making it to France 98. Foster is seen by many as a complete footballer who's greatest asset is his will to win and commitment, and this helped endear him to the Palace faithful, particularly as he played his first few games carrying an injury. He likes to get forward and support the front men, can strike a ball well, and score goals. If nothing else he adds further experience to the Eagles side, and is now the third current International Captain at Selhurst.
