This here is a quick guide on how to start in Nexus.

  • First of all, before you create a character, take some time and think about the name you will be using. Since Nexus is Role-Playing MUD, one should have a suitable name for it.
  • When you know, what you want to be, like a fighter, barbarian, mage, etc., read through information on what races are suitable for specific classes and what statistic points you need. This information is availible either on this homepage under Classes, or on official Nexus homepage under Handbook.
  • When you first login into Nexus, you should read the information that is provided to you.
  • After you are done with reading information, you will find yourself standing by the Fountain of Dreams in Falcion, city of apprentices, where you will remain until reach of level 7.
  • For the list of commands availible type 'help'.
  • To see information about your character, type 'info'.
  • To see what items you have type 'i' or 'inventory'.
  • If you would like to wear armor, you should type 'wear item'.
  • To wield a weapon type 'wield weapon', but if you have a missile weapon like a bow, you should also have some ammo for it, otherwise you will not be able to use it. When you have ammo, type 'wield weapon ammo'
  • To see how many experience points you need till your next level type 'exp'. It will also tell you how much gold you are carrying with you.

Communications

  • There are several commands one can use in order to communicate with other people.
  • 'send' command will send a private message to other player, but one has to have enough intelligent in order to send other people. Normally people with int 9 can send messages.
  • 'broadcast' command will be availible to you on 5th level. Each player has a fixed number of broadcasts he/she can use within 24 hours. Whatever you broadcast will be visible to all the players.
  • 'action' command will allow you to emote. In Nexus there are several social verbs, like smile, hug, kick..etc, but some things can be done through 'action'.

Movements

  • Almost every room has visible exits. If you are in the room with no exits visible, take your time to search.
  • Rooms in Nexus are 2-dimensional, which means one can move in the room Each room has 5 squares in it: cental one, 2 forward and 2 backwards.
  • Whenever you arrive into the room, you stand in the middle square. Monsters usually come out at the very front, or 2 squares away from you.
  • If you would like to move in the room, you can do it in two ways:
    • Use move command: move front will move you 1 square upfrint, move back will move you one square backwards.
    • Sprint command will move you two squares at a time: spr forward or spr back.
  • So whenever you would like to kill a monster, and you use melee weapon, you should move up to the very front of a room. On the other hand, if you are using missile weapon, you should stay at the very back, anb when monster comes to the same square as you , move away from it.
  • Whenever you have several people in one room, you can type 'people' and it will tell you where other people are in the room compared to you.

Combat and Spells

  • The combat system in Nexus, unlike in other MUDs, is not automatic. Which means that one must punch in 'kill' command every 10 sec. The same is with spells and devices. Depending on class of your character, you may do some high damage. For Example, fighters can instantly kill monsters in one shot, thieves can kill monster with one backstab, smart mage can kill monsters with spells faster than other people.
  • Whenever you attacked a monster, you can type in 'victim' to see how badly wounded the monster is and where is it in the room relative to you.
  • The system of spell casting is a little bit complicated: instead of typing in 'cast spellname' and casting spell, one must type in spell chant in order to cast spell. For example, if you would like to cast vigor, you have to:
    • Type in cast, hit enter.
    • When it asks you for chant, type in Thy energies return!
    • One must be precise, or spell will not be cast.
  • For offensive spells one must include the monster name.
  • Every spell in Nexus has it's range: offensive spells like hurt and rumble will hit the target that is only 1 square away from the caster, but on the other hand iceblade spell can be cast across the room. So before you decide where to stand think about what spells you are going to use.

Gaining Experience and Levelling

  • In order to gain experience one has to kill monsters.
  • Whenever you kill a monster or member of your group kills a monster, you get certain amount of experience. That amount is based on how much damage you did to the monster.
  • You can check how much exp you need to next level by typing in 'exp'
  • When the amount of experience hits 0, you can go level.
  • That can be done in your guild, in special room.
  • In order to level you will be required to pay some money.
  • Money you can get from selling drops of monsters that you kill.
  • The best way is to sell items and put the money into bank, because if you die, then you will lose 1/2 of cash that you have on your hands.

Hints for newbies

  • Before you fight, look at the monster using 'look monster'. It will tell you the level of monster, and at low levels you should not attack monsters that are 2-3 levels higher than you are, or the fight will most likely end with your death.
  • Do NOT attack goblin spies and knight templars. As far as i know, Goblin spies hold the record for killing most newbies.
  • Group up with someone of your own level and go fight somewhere.
  • For list of places to fight look at this homepage under Fights.
  • Whenever you come to fight, and someone is already there, ask that person if you can join him/her. The reason why it is important is because if the level difference of people in the room is higher than 5, then someone will not get experience for the death of monster.
