Shelly Peebles selected for

Soroptimist scholarship

Shelly Peebles, a 32-year-old Cottonwood resident, has been chosen as this year's recipient of the Soroptimist International of the Verde Valley Women's Opportunity Awards.

Peebles is pursuing an associates of arts degree studies at Yavapai college, with an ultimate goal of becoming a veterinarian.

The $750 cash award will help defray her education expenses. In addition, by being the local winner, she is qualified to compete for additional scholarship awards at the regional level, where there are two $3,000 second-place, and one $5,000 first-place award. the regional winner is then a candidate for the organization's $10,000 finalist award.

Peebles has been working hard to improve her life. she is currently working at J.C. Penney as a supervisor and has decided to go back to school, while being the sole financial support of her family.

She understands the value of education, and is a very diligent student and extremely enthusiastic about her class work.  She also has a great love for animals and is an active volunteer in the Animal Aid Network.  Peebles was recently asked by the Animal Aid Network president to join the organization's board of directors.

The Verde Valley Soroptimists chose Peebles because of her ability to face adversity, her desire to improve herself, and the excellent recommendations of her colleagues and advisors.

The Women's Opportunity Awards is a Soroptimist International of the Americas program that helps mature women (heads of their household) who need further education in order to upgrade their job skills, or re-enter the workforce.

In addition to supporting the Women's Opportunity Awards, the Soroptimist International of the Verde Valley also helps to support the Verde Valley Sanctuary, and other projects to help women an their communities.
