Kitchen Wisdom

Our ancestors satisfied a hunger for companionship with day long visits with friends and relatives. While children played, the ladies cooked dinner, talked to their heart's content, sewed, quilted, embroidered, or made pickles and preserves.

A Navajo legend says that a hair must be plucked from the head of a gatherer of prickly pears so the plant will yield fruit without twisting its heart.

Holding hands in a ring I vow with all beings to ease the pain in the ring of breath around the world. When the table is spread for the meal I vow with all beings to accept each dish as an offering that honors my ancient path.

No one cooks alone. Even at her most solitary, a cook in the kitchen is surrounded by generations of cooks past, the advice and menus of cooks present, and the wisdom of cookbook writers.

It seems to me that our three basic needs; for food and security and love, are so entwined that we cannot think of one without the other.

Animal crackers and cocoa to drink--
That is the finest of suppers, I think;
When I'm all grown up and can have what I please
I think I shall always insist upon these!

The kitchen's the coziest place that I know,
The kettle is singing,
The stove's all aglow
And there in the twilight
How jolly to see
The cocoa and animal cookies
Waiting for me.

Blow wind, blow!
Go mill, go!
That the miller may grind his corn;
That the baker may take it,
and into rolls make it,
and send us some hot in the morn

Polly put the kettle on.
Polly put the kettle on.
Polly put the kettle on.
We'll all have tea!

Sukey take it off again.
Sukey take it off again.

They've all gone away!

My Little Kitchen Prayer

Bless my little kitchen, Lord
I love its every nook
And bless me as I do my work,
Wash pots and pans and cook.

May the meals that I prepare
Be seasoned from above
With Thy Blessings and Thy Grace,
But most of all, Thy Love.

As we partake of earthly food,
The table Thou hast spread,
We'll not forget to thank Thee, Lord
For all our daily bread.

So bless my little kitchen, Lord
And those who enter in,
May they find naught but Joy and Peace
And Happiness therein.

A Kitchen Prayer

Thank God for dirty dishes
For they have a tale to tell
While other folks go hungry
We're eating very well
With home an d health and happiness
We shouldn't want or fuss
For this is a stack of evidence
God's very good to us.

Recipe Book

Take some friendliness and mix it
With a little bit of cheer;
Blend a touch of morning sunshine
With a pleasant atmosphere

Sprinkle just a pinch of kindness
In amongst the deeds to do ;
Mellow freely with compassion
And with tenderness endue.

With some sympathy be generous,
Spare its candor not a mite,
Season well with such expression
As befits a dawning bright.

Garnish freely with the beauty
That is deep within the heart
Spread around and up and over
For the purpose t'would impart.

It's the recipe for friendship...
Use it often, use it long,
Careful in its preparation
That results be never wrong.

Lettuce be kind to one another.
Egg yourself on to speak to someone about God.
Spice up your life with giving.
Pears that work together make a peachy home.
Rolls of magazines to read? Instead catsup on your Bible reading.
Butter to think about eternal life.
Dressing to go out? Then we'll meat you in the church.

  • If a messy kitchen is a happy kitchen --- my kitchen is delirious.
  • No husband has ever been shot while doing the dishes.
  • A husband is someone who takes out the trash and gives the impression he just cleaned the whole house.
  • If we are what we eat, then I'm easy, fast, and cheap.
  • A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand.
  • Thou shalt not weigh more than thy refrigerator.
  • Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused.
  • A clean house is a sign of a misspent life.
  • Help keep the kitchen clean - eat out.
  • Housework done properly can kill you.
  • Countless numbers of people have eaten in this kitchen and gone on to lead normal lives.
  • My next house will have no kitchen --- just vending machines.

    Bread

    Bread To satisfy the men,
    As Grandma was aware,
    Took a certain, special smell
    That floated on the air.
    It wasn't Toujours Moi
    That entranced Grandpapa.
    Nor was it Chantilly
    That made him act silly.
The scent that made strong men
    As meek as any mouse,
Was the smell of baking bread
    Wafting through the house.
    Whether raisin, wheat or spoon,
    Or a chewy cinnamon bun,
    Hot biscuits for a party
Or corn muffins just for one.
It drew men like a magnet
    (And just between us two)
    What it did for Grandma,
It will surely do for you!
