Poppy Field

1996

Watercolor on 140 lb. stretched paper

46 x 60

This is the only really huge watercolor I've done. I found it prohibitively expensive to frame. I made a mat out of thin balsa wood mitered at the corners and used plexiglass. I ended up cropping the height of the painting some to use a 4' x 8' piece of plexiglass.

Paintings wider than an adult arm span (approximately 5 feet) create an environmental space that puts the viewer inside the painting -- the painting is no longer an object but an environment.
