my 98 texas buck

1998 Texas Buck ---The Story:

My trip to Texas provided good memories. I finally got to meet Paul Abat, also known as Venado Loco in Buck Talk chat room. Paul is the person most responsible for me having a Home Page. He has encouraged and tutored me with endless patience in this regard. I did not have the pleasure of hunting with Paul but he did take time to meet me at the San Antonio Airport where we were able to sit and chat. I hope that in the future Paul and I will be able to spend some time together and hopefully share a hunt.

An outfitted hunt in Texas is a great opportunity to see lots of quality animals. Those of us who are used to cold conditions in rugged terrain may find the different style of hunting hard to adjust to. Not only are the hunting methods different but the relatively small body size of the deer makes it more difficult to assess antler quality.
There are, of course, large bodied bucks in Texas and most people realize that Texas is famous for superb antlered whitetails. My experience was on a ranch where the minimum requirements are fairly liberal, however, different levels of trophy hunts are available --- at different dollar levels.

My best day was one where I did not pull the trigger but spent the day with an expert guide doing rattling and stalk hunting. For me personally that seems like the most enjoyable way to hunt the terrain of the type we were in. The buck pictured above was taken on the last day of my hunt from an enclosed box blind as he stood beneath an automated corn feeder waiting for breakfast! He is a fine buck, but if I am fortunate enough to hunt Texas again it will be in a more traditional manner.

If you are contemplating a hunt in Texas it would pay to do some research. Some areas, such as the one I was in, provide large numbers of bucks with good quality antler development. Other areas may not offer the numbers of whitetails but are better known for higher caliber trophy bucks.

Dave's Texas Buck

Dave's 98 texas buck

Dave is an accomplished bird hunter but had never hunted big game until seven weeks prior to this trip when he and I went to Saskatchewan for a bear hunt. This nice whitetail fell to a perfectly placed shot on the second day of a four day hunt. Dave then repeated the performance to put a doe in the freezer. Since returning home it has become evident that Dr. Frederick receives as much satisfaction from applying his culinary skills to the wild game that we bring from the ends of North America as he does from the actual hunting. Dave's consciencious efforts have resulted in a fine bear and two deer in his first attempts --- good job my friend!
