METAL HAMMER, MARCH 1999

The following article appeared in the March '99 issue of Metal Hammer. The band was featured in the "Check 'Em Out" section which focuses on bands to watch for.

Goth metallers are suppossed to be miserable and depressed. That comes with the territory. So it's something of a shock when Cristina Scabbia, vocalist with Italian crew LACUNA COIL, insists that the band are actually very contented souls. "Italians are generally happy people. We smile a lot, like to enjoy ourselves and have a great passion for life. That may sound strange when you listen to our music, but we put all of our dark side into the songs. We are an unusual band in Italy, though. Most of the successful ones like RHAPSODY and LABYRINTH, are into epic metal."

Formed in 1996, the Coil landed a deal with Century Media on the back of a two track demo, releasing a self titled mini-album last year. Tours supporting both MOONSPELL and THE GATHERING helped push the band into the spotlight, and their long awaited debut album, "In A Reverie", is released on February 22. This also marks the recording debut of the band's new line-up, with Cristina joined by male vocalist Andrea Ferro, guitarist Cristiano Migliore, bassist Marco Coti Zelati and drummer Critiano Mozzati.

LACUNA COIL will start touring Europe shortly, but sadly UK dates might be some way off. "The problem with Britain is that it's so fashion-led", says Cristina. "It seems that image is much more important than music over there. And since we put our music ahead of image, we might struggle to get anywhere. But that definitely won't stop us trying at some point!"
