Subject: Dempsey Coker of Alabama From: Sscok Date: July 06, 2000 Starting in 1778 records are bound in Burke County, North Carolina for brothers Charles, William and Joseph Coker. William would leave Burke county, NC for Knox County, TN sometime after 1782. Joseph would leave Burke county, NC for Greenville County, South Carolina sometime after 1800. Charles first wife is thought to have died about 1781. Known children by his first wife are; William also known as Buck born 1769, Leonard Sr born abt 1770 , Charles born about 1771 and Elizabeth born 26 May, 1781. Charles married Judith Moore, the widow of Edward Lee. Edward Lee had died at about the same time as Charles Coker's wife. According to the estate papers of Edward Lee Buck Coker married a dau of Edward and Judith. In the 1790 Census of Burke county, Charles family is listed with 2 males over 16 and two males under 16 and three females. Charles adult children; Charles, William and Leonard live nearby. Known children of Charles Coker and Judith Moore are: Jane born abt 1784, Warren born about 1789, possibly James born about 1790, and Joseph born 13 April, 1793. It is not clear who the other male over 16 in Charles Cokers' household. The male children of Edward Lee had already moved on to Greenville county, SC, and are found in the census there. Charles Coker left Burke County about 1795 for Knox County, TN. He died there in 1800. His male children by his first marriage left Burke county for Greenville county, SC, in 1791. Leonard would stay in Greenville until 1811 when he left SC for Alabama. William and Charles joined their father in Knox Co., TN, sometime before 1800. In EASTERN TENNESSEE TAXPAYERS there is a 1806 Tax List. In Capt Haislet's Co Charles Coker is found, 100 acres, 1 poll. This could be the son of Charles or the son of William. In Capt Lonas Co Demsy Coker, 0 acres, 1 Poll, is found. Also in this Co is Thomas Hudiburgh. Charles Coker's brother, William, died in Knox co, 1816, and left a will mentioning 16 children. Hudiburgh married the widow of William Coker. In Capt Tipton's Co William Coker is found, 300 acres. This is William, brother of Charles, that died in 1816. Also in this list is Jude Coker. This is Judith Moore, widow of Charles Coker who died in 1800. Charles Cokers son had moved to Jefferson co, AL. William "Buck" Coker moved on to NW Arkansas. Sons Joseph and Warren moved on to Smith/Macon co, TN. Son Charles and his sisters remained in Knox County. The William Coker who died in Knox co, 1816, left a will mentioning 16 children but none are named Dempsey. Other researchers have said they have found a Demspey Coker in the Mississippi Territory by 1816. There is a Bryant Coker also found there at that time and he is said to have served in the War of 1812 in the MS Militia. In 1830 Federal Census of Washington co, AL, a Dempsey Coker is found, 10110001-11100???. In the 1840 Federal Census of Washington co, AL, Dempsey is found again, 12100001-11310101. So it appears that Dempsey is born abt 1770-1780. Old enough to be the Dempsey on the 1806 Tax List in Knox, Co, TN, and the other male over 16 in the Charles Coker household in 1790 Burke county, NC. There are other Coker families living nearby to Dempsey in Washington county, AL. It is my guess that; Seborn, Green and Leonard are also his sons. The 1850 Census indicates that Seaborn is born 1804, TN. He has a son James D Coker and probably a son Warren Coker both of whom live nearby. Naming patterns. William "Buck" Coker had a son Joseph Dempsey Coker and a grandson Dempsey Fields Coker. Buck also had a grandson Seborn Coker. Charles Coker had a son Warren Coker. (Judith Moore had a brother Warren Moore). Charles Coker had a son James. The naming patterns seem to be consistent with those of the Burke County, NC, Cokers and the time frame seems to allow this Dempsey to be another son of Charles.
