Tori Amos is more than a talented singer and songwriter; she is a compassionate, loving human being. Sparked by her own experience with sexual violence, and an incident where a young girl begged her for help backstage, because she knew she would be raped that night at home, Tori co-founded RAINN, the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network

Tori has strived to unlock the silence that holds many survivors prisoner, afraid of a light in the dark. She embraces fellow survivors with her music and kindness, and is a lifesaver to many; she knows of the stigma that survivors face, knows of the pain. It is in this spirit, that I created this page.
This page is dedicated to unlocking the silence. If you have a link, a comment, or story to share, please e-mail me. I only hope that survivors may take some comfort from this page as they strive to "let them bleed, let them wash away". It is a long road, for both survivors and their supports. To quote Jewel, let us all strive to
Be the difference the makes the difference
YOU are the difference.
IMPORTANT: Eminem, the rapper whose "Slim Shady LP" is on top of the charts, jokes about rape and violence against women in his lyrics. A good friend of mine has begun a group called TASTE (Take A Stand To Educate) to stop such lyrics from escaping notice.

~Me And A Gun~
5 am Friday morning
Thursday night far from sleep
I'm still up and driving
Can't go home obviously
So I'll just change direction cause they'll soon know where I live
And I want to live
Got a full tank and some chips
It was me and a gun and a man on my back
And I sang "holy holy" as he buttoned down his pants
You can laugh, it's kind of funny
The things you think in times like these
Like I haven't seen Barbados so I must get out of this
Yes I wore a slinky red thing
Does that mean I should spread
For you, your friends, your father, Mr Ed
Was Me and a gun and a man on my back
But I haven't seen Barbados so I must get out of this
And I know what this means
Me and Jesus, a few years back, used to hang
And he said, "It's your choice babe, just remember
I don't think you'll be back in 3 days' time,
So you choose well"
Tell me what's right, is it my right
To be on my stomach
Of Fred's Seville
It's me and a gun and a man on my back
But I haven't seen Barbados so I must get out of this
And do you know Carolina, where the biscuits are soft and sweet
These things go through your head
When there's a man on your back
You're pushed flat on your stomach, it's not a classic Cadillac
Me and a gun and a man on my back
But I haven't seen Barbados so I must get out of this
I haven't seen Barbados so I must get out of this

"She's afraid of a light in the dark......"
A POEM, DEDICATED TO SURVIVORS
THE SILENT SCREAM (MARCH 28, 1999)
Listen to it
Oh gods, it never fades
The pain, the agony
to hear that which is ignored
To hear the silent scream
They all walk by,
going about their meaningless days
While the scream echoes, echoes
Then slowly fades
as hope decays
They know that they are not heard
But they are, though my tears
cannot be seen
They are heard, and loved,
and do not feel it
So far away.....
I can't reach you,
though I strain my limbs
Dangling into your chasms
of despair
But I hear you cry, as I cry
It chills my body,
breaks my soul apart
I long to release the scream
Make everyone hear
Make them all see
Make them all see the truth
But the drones, they do
not stop to care
They choose deafness
over compassion
It's easier to pretend
It's easier to ignore the screams than to answer
Listen to it
Oh gods, it never fades
The pain, the agony
to hear that which is ignored
To hear the silent scream
