What is your favourite British charter airline?

Current Results

Airtours International began operations out of Manchester International (MAN) on the 11 March 1991 using McDonnell Douglas MD80 aircraft. The airline is part of the Airtours group which began life in 1978. In 1993 Airtours acquired Aspro Holidays and its airline, Inter European Airways. The operations and fleet of Inter European were fully merged into Airtours International in November 1993. In 1996 Airtours acquired Danish Charter Airline Premiair, whose aircraft now fly in the Airtours Livery. Airtours also have a 65% holding in charter airline Air Belgium. Airtours Fleet nowadays comprises of Boeing 757's, Boeing 767's, Airbus A320's, Airbus A321's, Airbus A330's and a McDonnell Douglas DC-10. Some of Airtours A320's have been leased to Premiair.

Airtours' A330-200's

Airtours was the second UK airline to operate the A330-200 (The first being Monarch). The aircraft are configured with 363 seats, with 49 being Premiair Gold, Airtours Business class (See Section Below). G-MDBD is based at London Gatwick (LGW) and G-MLJL is based at Manchester (MAN). The aircraft are used on Long-haul routes to destinations including Jamaica, Mexico, Barbados, Cuba and Florida. A unique feature of the two aircraft is that they feature spacious lavatories under the cabin floor, interestingly Airtours is the first airline to have this option. There is a seat-back TV at every seat on the A330 showing movies, TV programmes and an external camera. Games can also be played with the hire of a games controller (£5).

Airtours Premiair Gold is an upgraded service available on-board all Airbus A330 flights and selected Boeing 767 flights. Premiair Gold seating features increased seat width, additional legroom and a greater seat recline. All Premiair Gold passengers have a personal Video screen, either in the form of a seatback TV featuring seven channels of Video and movies (A330) or a Sony Video Walkman (B767) with a choice of 6 movies. 10 channels of audio are available on all aircraft. Premiair Gold passengers also benefit from a complimentary bar, a choice of 11 in-flight meals, Fresh Fruit, increased baggage allowance, priority baggage collection & newspapers and magazines.

l Noticed that airtours routes where the shourtest and best to do with the weather conditions, some the aircraft needed cleaning, the comfort there for wasnt first class and the service staff needed to consentrate on serving the passengers. overall 3 out of 5

Never fly with Airtours again. The inbound flight from Palma to Glasgow was 11.5 hours late due to a technical fault on the Boeing 757 aircraft. Cabin crew were O.K. The in flight meal was roast potatoes and steak - at 8.30 in the morning!!

Flew Man-Aricife. Efficient and as pleasant as any we have used before, better than many. Best in flight food we've ever had. Cabin staff very good. No compaints whatsoever. We are going with Airtours to Dominican Republic in Jan 2002 and have upgraded. On past experience we have no doubt it will be as enjoyable a flight as possible over such a distance.

I have flown with AIH on 7 of their flights, 6 been IT Charters, the 7th been a private charter and we have never had a problem with the ailine itself. We have only once had a significantly late departure due to an emergency closing the airport and delaying the incoming a/c by 7 hours. Having flown on the airlines A320's, 321's, Boeing 757's and DC-10's i have never had a particularly bad interior, although we all know about how crampt UK Charter airline seats are!!

I notice in your history of Airtours, you do not mention anything about their operation in the U.S? I am a former Flight Attendant with SkyserviceUSA, which had 2 DC-10-10 Aircraft, registration numbers N571RY and N572RY, along with an A320 with G-something registration. All 3 aircraft were in current Airtours livery. Since Airtours did not have authority to operate US originating charters, the aircraft were painted with the airtours livery, the cockpit crew were provided by Ryan International Airlines in Wichita, Kansas, and the Cabin Crew were hired and trained by Skyservice (Canada). Talk about confusion!. In any case, the charters were sold through U.S. Tour Operator, Suntrips, which the Airtours group eventually purchased in 2000. The 3 aircraft of SkyserviceUSA were based in LAX & SFO (the DC-10's), and the A320 was split between the 3 bases, the 3rd being Denver.,their destinations were from all 3 bases to Honolulu, Maui and various resorts in Mexico. Shortly after Airtours purchased Suntrips in late 1999/early 2000, Skyservice Canada pulled-out of the Cabin Crew part of the operation (that is when I left the company), and it was all turned over to Ryan International. Shortly thereafter, the A320 was returned to Airtours in Manchester, the bases in LAX and Denver were closed, and the 2 remaining DC-10's were repainted, the Airtours livery remained, but the title SkyserviceUSA was changed to "Suntrips". Both aircraft remain at the SFO base, operating charters today as Suntips (still with the Airtours livery). While I used to work as a Flight Attendant for this company, and we always did our best to provide top-notch service in-flight, the fact remains the aircraft were configured at 379 on the DC-10's and 179 on the A320; the seat pitch was pretty much intolerable; combined with the fact that the DC-10's anyway were VERY old, usually made for a pretty much miserable in-flight experience, despite the fact we offered choice of meal entree's, complimentary wines with meals and after dinner liquer's. Thus, as a passenger or as a flight attendant, the best I can give Airtours is a "Fair" rating. Just thought your readers might like some info on the Airtours U.S. connection.

AIH151/152 Man-Alicante 23rd/2nd Jan. Positive: Crew were friendly. Aircraft G-LCRC b757 was clean. Food was good considering it was air food. Negative: Lack of flight info on return journey. Lack of info on turbulence. Lack of legroom (I am 6ft). Not much info about the disembarkation problems at Manchester. People were getting panicky after 15 minutes, especially when the emergency lighting came on. Otherwise 2 reasonable flights.

I think Airtours is a terrible airline I flew with them to Sanford from Cardiff and we had a 26 hr delay due to a technical failure with the Engine and eventually flew from manchester with an Airtours 767 on the way back we had a 13 hr delay and flew back to Cardiff on a creaky old horrible Skyserivce A330. In Mahon with airtours on the inbound flight we were delayed for 1 hr due to Technical Failures with there A321 aircraft. Overall I think Airtours is a shoddy Airline and should be Closed.

Airtours International Airways would be the WORSE airline I have ever flown as we had constant delays outbound and inbound for our flights. We travelled on a Boeind 767 and it was smelly and very dirty.
