What is your favourite British charter airline?

Britannia Airways was formed in 1962 when it was then known as Euravia. It began operations with three Lockheed Constellation aircraft bought from El Al. In 1964 Euravia began to re-equip with more modern Bristol Britannia turboprops and that is when the present name was adopted. In 1965 Britannia and sister company Universal Sky Tours became part of the Thomson Corporation. Throughout the 1960's Britannia was 'one step ahead of the rest' introducing new innovations such as hot meals for holidaymakers and assigned seating for passengers so they didn't have to rush to the aircraft to get the best seats. Britannia entered the jet age in 1968  becoming the first European customer of the 737-200. The 737's served the airline well right up to 1994 when the last 737-200 was retired. In 1984 Britannia received its first two wide-bodied 767-200 aircraft, being a first European customer yet again. 1992 so the launch of 'Royal Service'. This upgraded in-flight service included improvements to the cabin interiors, meals and in-flight entertainment.

Britannia's present fleet is made up of 737, 757 and 767 aircraft. The first 757-200 aircraft joined the fleet in 1990 and in 1996 Britannia's first 767-300 ER aircraft entered service. Five next-generation 737-800 aircraft will join Britannia's fleet in 2000. These aircraft will be ideal for flights from smaller regional airports. For summer 1999 Britannia leased 3 Airbus A320-200 aircraft (EI-TLE, EI-TLF & EI-TLO) from Transaer and operated them in a 180 seat configuration.

1997 saw the launch of '360', Britannia's new, once again improved in-flight service. Subtle, light and contemporary cabin interiors are designed to make people feel at ease. The Cabin crew uniforms have also been updated. The uniforms have been designed by Elizabeth Emmanuel. A new children's service called OBK has also been created. May 1999 saw the launch of Britannia's three-class service on all long-haul flights.

360 Extra is available on all Britannia flights. On short haul flights, 360 extra seats are located at Emergency exits and behind partition walls. Passengers benefit from extra legroom. On 767-300 flights 360 extra seats are located in the front cabin of the aircraft and passengers benefit from:

- 4 inches extra legroom
- Priority boarding (after 360 premium)
- 360 travel pack

Britannia 360 premium is available on-board 767-300 flights with upgrade prices starting from £120. Benefits of the 360 premium service include:

- 5 inches extra legroom.
- Wider seats with increased recline.
- Complimentary drinks.
- Upgraded meals.
- Seat back video.
- Priority boarding & Travel Pack.

Flew with Britannia Airways between Glasgow and Luton on a 767-300 and flew in Britannia's 360 Premium cabin. Service was excellent, cabin crew were friendly and allowed flight deck visit. Meals were excellent and the entertainment was excellent apart from the lack of ptv's. Seats were comfortable and legroom was generous. The only thing that could have been done was the 360 premium cabin being separated from the main cabin with a curtain.

I flew on BY177A from London Gatwick in July this year,I flew on a Boeing 767-300 aircraft ( G-OBYJ ) and this was the best flight I have ever been on. The flight left early, the cabin crew were so friendly and polite, whatever I wanted they wold get. the leg room was a bit lacking in space, but I was prepared to overlook this due to the impeccable service I received. The meal we had on the outbound flight was so good, it was piping hot, and the amount of extras you got was amazing. When we landed in Paphos we were gain early. Our return flight was again on a Boeing 767-300 aircraft ( G-OBYI ) the meal was fantastic again and the cabin crew were once again brilliant. We were alowed to walk around the aircaft as well, which is something I have never been able to do on other airlines like Monarch and Airtours International. The flight was late getting back to Gatwick, admittedly this was not Britannias fault, we were flying into the wind. The planes were also very clean and looked new. I recommend Britannia as an airline that everybody shoud try, all the staff made you feel like you were a first cass passenger. All my future flights will be taken with Britannia Airways.

I have flown with britannia airways many times in the past and have found them excellent, one of the best charter airlines ever! My auntie on the other hand would have something else to say. Cardiff to Gerona Sept 2000 plane crash landed in a thunderstorm and broke into 3 slid off the runway. Engines and landing gear completely obliterated. Emergency services took an hour to find them because the control tower had no idea the plane crashed. Despite this britannia provided excellent after care for all passengers including a flight home on nigel mansells private jet!! they are still awaiting compensation!

Updates on Britannia for you all: Thomson Travel Group (TTG) was taken over by Preussag AG this year (the company behind Germany's TUI and Hapag LLoyd). This now massive company (the largest tourism group in the world!) has brought all it's travel companies (of which there are now over 200 brand names) under the umbrella "World of Tui". Britannia will retain it's title but has a new livery, the same as all the other WoTUI airlines. 360 has now been scrapped it seems, and the inflight service is now no longer a seperate brand, but is of the same high quality. Britannia is definately the best choice for travel.

Myself and 2 other companions had our worst flight ever on the 20th June 2002. Flight BY088B was our return flight from Florida. We were not impressed with our outgoing flight 2 weeks previously on the 6th June 2002. The return flight was awful. We were in Britannia's 360 Premium cabin which had an electrical fault. There were no overhead reading lights or call button lights. This fault had not been passed on to the crew of our plane. We mangaed up until the cabin crew turned off the main cabin lights then we were left in complete darkness (being a night flight). We did experience some turbulence on our journey home and the seatbelt signs came on a few times. When the cabin crew started duty free the seatbelt signs came on even though there was no turbulence. We were then left in Premium cabin unattended for almost an hour while the crew went round with the duty free in economy. As we had no call lights we were unable to attract attention of cabin crew. One of our party was in dire need for the toilet and wanted to know if they could leave their seat. Nobody answered our call (no call lights). We waited for almost an hour and many fellow passengers were getting upset about being left unattended and not having their calls answered. One poor child sitting near us eventually wet himself. A pasenger sitting in front of us decided enough was enough and left his seat to find an attendent. He was escorted back to his seat. He was not happy and neither were we. When we complained we were told that they were doing the duty free and they were also short staffed. Anything could have happened in the hour that the Premium cabin was left unattended. Someone could have been taken ill or even died and the crew would not have known. Worse still was the security risk. There was no cabin crew between us and the flight deck! When we complained we were given short shrift by the cabin crew. The air conditioning was also poor in Premium cabin and smelt stale. We were told it was working properly and that it felt cooler/fresher in economy because the toilets were near the exit! When breakfast came round it was plonked in front of us with little communication from cabin crew. The meal service/choice was poor. There was also no priority check-in at our departure airport (Sanford) in Florida even though we were in Premium cabin. Something Britannia does not have in it's package even though Monarch, Air 2000 & My Travel did have priority check-in at the same airport. Also, our baggage allowance was 30kg when we flew Premium with Monarch and Air 2000 on previous flights to Florida. With Britannia we only got 20kg the same as economy. For the extra £420 (£140 per person)that we paid for 3 people for Premium cabin upgrade, we felt it was just not worth it with Britannia. When we got home we wrote a letter of complaint which we sent on the 24th June 2002. We heard nothing and wrote again on the 13th July 2002. Funnily enough a letter of acknowledgement was also written on the same day (13th July). As yet we are still waiting for a reply. We have sent another letter (dated 4th August 2002) but whether Britannia will answer or not we shall have to see. A very poor service overall.

We flew with britannia air in Aug, the flight and staff aboard were great and can not fault them in any way, however the staff in britannia offices leave a lot to be desired, on landing we were told are lugguge had not arrived in gatwick but not to worry fill in the relevant forms and luggage would be with us in 48hrs at the most. 8 days later and numerous phone calls to listen to piped music are luggage was returned damaged and with a form attached to it saying that it had been in the airport for the duration of its loss. am still waiting for reply to letter sent on the 12th aug(ENCLOSED A STAMPED ADDRESSED ENVELOPE FOR THE REPLY) with answers to questions have now written to managing director peter buckingham to see if that brings a response, but as i said before can not fault the air crew.

I flew with britannia to Mahon (menorca) from Birmingham in August on a 767-200, the aircraft was clean and comfortable (more legroom than JMC and Airtours), the meal was very nice and the inflight entertainment was good (and FREE - no headsets to buy!!) the flight back was just the same, the cabin staff were friendly and helpful and always informed us of where we were and what the weather was like etc.. the flights were on time and we landed around 15 minutes early each time. Overall, britannia is the best airline I have ever flown with and I would reccomend them to anyone!

Flown with Britannia Airways many, many times over the last 10 years and they are the best airline going! Very professional, look after you all the way. Excellent entertainment. Legroom was very generous. They were even first airline to base a 767 at Newcastle (some years ago) which was very spacious. Been on-time every time I've flown with them. Far above the rest of the charter airlines.
