What is your favourite British charter airline?

Current Results

Virgin Atlantic is Britain's second largest long-haul airline. Virgin Atlantic was established in 1984 as an off-shoot from Richard Branson's Virgin Group and aimed to offer passengers a high quality service at excellent prices. The first flight took place between Gatwick and Newark on June 22, 1984. Miami was also added to the airlines expanding route network in 1986 with flights being operated from London Gatwick. Throughout the 80's Virgin Atlantic started up new routes to destinations including Orlando, Boston and Tokyo. In 1989 the airline offered business class passengers the use of video walkman's, making it the first airline in the world to offer individual TV's to customers. By June 1991 Virgin Atlantic was the only airline worldwide offering individual TV's in all classes. 1991 also saw the airline operating its first Heathrow services with flights to New York - JFK, Los Angeles and Tokyo. Virgin Atlantic launched 'Virgin Mid Class' in 1992 which offered a super economy service to full fare economy passengers. This service was rebranded to 'Premium Economy' in 1994 to appeal to a wider scope of passengers. In December 1993 Virgin Atlantic received their first Airbus A340-300 aircraft. The aircraft was named 'Lady in Red' by HRH Princess of Wales and featured a new 16 channel interactive entertainment system. Over the remaining years of the 1990's Virgin Atlantic's fleet expanded rapidly with the addition of A340-300's, 747-400's and 747-200's. The airline also launched new routes to destinations including Athens, San Francisco, Washington and Johannesburg.

In 1999 Virgin Atlantic revealed their new corporate identity. It featured a new aircraft livery and improvements in all cabins on the aircraft. Virgin's upper class cabin received the biggest make-over and now features fully flat sleeper seats and an increased size in-flight bar. It is hard to remember that Upper Class is in fact a business class product. It more than betters many airlines first class cabins. Virgin Atlantic have become launch customers for two new Airbus aircraft - the A340-600 and A380. The airline has ordered up to 16 A340-600's with delivery commencing in 2002 and up to 6 A380's with deliveries commencing in 2006. However Virgin Atlantic have not forgotten about their loyal 747 fleet. It will be enlarged with five 747-400's being delivered through 2001. A new route from Gatwick to Toronto will also be started during summer 2001. Services are due to be operated by a Boeing 747.

Comfort, par excellence! We flew Virgin from Los Angeles to London and back in 1993 and were COMPLETELY satisfied, to say nothing of the terminal facilities.

We flew from London to LA with Virgin. Our son who is physically and mentally handicapped was "badly ill" on the return flight and we had to 'clean' him up before we could dis-embark. This entailed moving him to a galley so that we could lay him out on the floor. All told this took some 40 minutes. The cabin crew who had to wait for us were kidness personified. They could not do enough for us which really helped as we were embarrased as this was the first time this had ever happened to us. We never fly anyone but Virgin unless we can help it, and this kind of service just reinforces our appreciation of Virgin atlantic.

Virgin Atlantic service varied from the flight to and from Scotland to JFK. Seats uncomfortable. Food too spicy. Movie/entertainment good. Computer games too. Flight attendants very helpful on return flight from Heathrow to JFK.

Even thought my father is a retired BA employee, I've been flying with Virgin since 1992 and with very few exceptions the flights have been exceptional. I'm now a member of their Gold Flying Club and been treated so well by the airline that I'd never consider using any other carrier if Virgin fly the route. The new 747-400 they've been using on the Boston route has new seats in Economy and Premium Economy, plus an excellent video-on-demand 'V Port' entertainment system (Imagine, you can choose the movie you want to watch, start it whenever you like, pause it when you go to the loo and rewind if you missed a bit!). And that's available in all cabins, not just Upper. The 'Clubhouses' (VIP lounges) are also a jewel in Virgin's service - way better than all other's I've tried (and I've tried a few!). The Heathrow Clubhouse remains, however, the star. Probably the best lounge in the world.

I flew from Manchester to Orlando, Sept 2000 in what was supposed to have been a Virgin Jumbo,On our 25th wedding anniverary. All we got was an Iclandic beaten up substitute which was a disaster from start to finish. What was more surprising Customer Services were a damn sight worse.

Flew VS ,Heathrow to New York JFK in Oct 02. B747 G-VAST on way out. Very noisy Air Conditioning in-flight but crew and pilots helpful and informative. On return to Heathrow, flew on the new A340-600 G-VMEG (only 3 weeks old!) Has best entertainment system in world with 41 different films you can stop and rewind whenever you want! And this was in Economy! Definately upgrade to Premium though - can become cramped on long-hauls. Also had millions of music, news and kids channels! Everybody - FLY VIRGIN!!

What has happened to Virgin? We flew to Orlando on a 747-400 "HOT LIPS"...Have they added more seats? I think they have made severe cutbacks, and it shows on our 4th flight..Next year I think its back to U.S.Airways for us. Not a direct flight but GREAT service...with legroom

My wife and I flew on VS601 to J,burg on 26 October 2002.We were very unimpressed with the legroom on the Airbus, it really felt like a charter flight, totally inappropiate for a longhaul flight.Less gimmicks more legroom please. The service was good.

Hello. I have flown on Virgin Atlantic 4 times (B747-200 once) and B747-400 3 times. I LOVE VIRGIN ATLANTIC. Everybody in Economy class gets P-TVs which is great, and u get your own "toiletmap" with toothbrush, soocks, and so on. Virgin is my favourite airliner of all!!Besides, I love their painth scheme soooo much.
