Sarah McLachlan and Camille Henderson

You've seen her in the background of concerts and TV appearances, but do you have a clue who Camille Henderson is?  Besides being the back-up vocalist for Sarah McLachlan, Camille is an emerging artist on the verge of fame.  She has been crafting her own work for some time now, including Duende, her contribution on Delerium's latest album, Karma.  It has been tough for me to find information about Camille on the web, but I've managed to snag a few items, most of which are shown here.  This page is a tribute to Camille and her talents.

Camille Henderson Camille's talent is more than evident.  (Perhaps she gets it from her famous father Bill Henderson of Chilliwack.)  She's been touring with Sarah since Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.  Her voice melts into Sarah's and creates rich, spine-tingling vox.  Last October, I witnessed Sarah in concert for three hours, and I saw how incredibly hard Sarah and Camille work to achieve such perfection.  Maybe some people didn't know who Camille was, but I noticed her.  She supported Sarah, and at times took over, providing the strongest vocals.   Sarah herself says that Camille has "the voice of an angel, a tough bird." Somebody get this girl a record deal!

Camille's voice with Delerium was felt to be a wedlock that had to happen. Duende is testament to this. Delerium loved the ideas that Camille brought forward and her vocal tracks were recorded in Vancouver, at Hiposonic studios. Perhaps other manifestations of her great voice and unorthodox approach to vocals and performance will appear in the future.

Band member Profile on Camille from the Fall '98 issue of Murmurs newsletter

How did you get started in the music business?

My family has been in the music business for a long time, so it's sort of been a natural place to be.  I took a lot of lessons growing up:  gymnastics, drama, dance, piano, voice, violin.  It was an everyday kind of thing, so I was sort of 'in' it from the beginning.

How did you hook up with Sarah?

I had heard that they were holding auditions through Luke (Doucet), who was auditioning for guitar at that time.  It was successful and I eventually just decided to go for it.

How long ago was that?

What is next after Lilith?  Any projects on the go?

I'm quite excited to have the time to dedicate some time to my own thing.  I will hopefully get into pre-production for my own record.  I'm excited about a few potential people that I may get to work with.

What kind of influences?

I really like a lot of Bjork's stuff and the playfulness she has with arrangements, song ideas, lyrics.  The Sneaker Pimps are great and I like the spacious sounds of Portishead.
