Pens Draft Defenseman with 1st Round Pick
The Penguins made Ryan Whitney the third defenseman taken in the NHL draft, selecting the Boston University freshman at fifth overall. Whitney is not expected to be ready to jump to the NHL and said he plans to return to school next season. The third-ranked North American prospect, Whitney played for the United States at the World Junior Championships and had a goal and two assists in seven games. A Boston native, Whitney was listed at 6-3 and 202 pounds but already has added 10 pounds to his frame. He was second on the Terriers with a plus-16 rating and won All-Rookie honors in Hockey East.
