General Information on the Weapons page
- It is possible that you will come across certain situations when it is
in your best interest not to use a certain weapon that has appeared on the screen. A good
example is the bomb. If you have a lot of damage, you certainly don't want to accidentally
commit suicide. This happens often (1) because the bomb activates itself if it has not
picked up after a few seconds and (2) because you might hit yourself if you throw the bomb
at an opponent who is near you.
- Along the same lines as above, here's a little anecdote that will cover
another strategy. Personally, I am a master at using the lightsaber, or beam sword as
Nintendo felt they needed to deem it. Thus, whenever I got the beam sword during a game, I
would clean house and get a bunch of kills. However, no one else really could use it all
that well, and nowhere even close to as well as I could use it. So, it came to a point
that a new strategy was used against my beam sword offense: they wouldn't let me have it.
As soon as a beam sword would appear on the screen, my opponents would scramble for it,
run it to the nearest edge, and then throw it off into eternity. Cruel, but an effective
strategy towards keeping someone from killing you with a certain weapon every time.
- Only press a direction when throwing an item when necessary. For
example, if someone is far away or above or below you. Otherwise, the throw will be harder
and thus the item will usually disappear more quickly for multiple throw items.
Strategies for using:
- As stated above, you want to be careful not to hit yourself when using
this potent launcher. However, there is a nice little strategy which you can use to gain
points on your opponents. If you notice that an opponent has over 100% damage, just run
over to them with your Bob-omb in hand. And, as soon as you're anywhere near that
opponent, simply press Down + A to throw it straight down to get an easy kill. Even if
you're killed as well, it will only count as a suicide so your opponent will get -1 points
and you will get a net of 0 points. The real excitement of this strategy though is getting
more than one opponent this way...
Strategies for using:
- The fan is a pretty weak weapon but, if you throw it at your opponent,
he will be launched straight up and this offer you a great chance to combo into a launch
with an air attack.
Strategies for using:
- Trap your opponent against a wall (e.g. on the lower level of the Great
Fox or Link's board) and start blowing fire. If you're opponent isn't blocking,
their damage will skyrocket over the next couple of seconds. If they are blocking,
their shield will eventually break; at this point, continue blowing the fire to knock
their damage up.
- Use the fire flower on opponents who are near the edge of the board. It
will push them back and possibly off of the platform. It also will push back those who are
trying to come back from a launch. This works especially well on Peach's Castle if
you push an opponent off the moving platform while it's moving towards the middle.
- Throw it at your opponent to launch them a good distance.
- Team play: Get one or both of your opponents
in the fire. Once you've inflicted a good percentage of damage, have your teammate
stand there and throw your opponent(s) while they are still stuck in the flame.
Strategies against:
- Get in front of your opponent to coax them into using the fire flower on
you. Quickly jump over them--avoiding the fire--and attack them from behind
(preferably, throw them). This should work as attacking with the fire flower has a
high recovery time.
- Team play: If you're stuck in the flame, yell
at your teammate until he comes to your rescue.
Strategies for using:
- The green shell is great for launching. However, you should stand still
when throwing it or otherwise it will disappear more quickly.
- Instead of picking up the shell, stand next to it. Then, wait for
your opponent to come in front of you. At this point, attack the shell (use your A
move as it's the quickest) and it will go flying into your opponent. This way, there
will be less of a chance that he will know it's coming.
Strategies for using:
- Hitting opponents with this is not very easy. So, when you pick it
up, make sure your opponent(s) are near you.
- If your opponent is jumping on platforms trying to avoid you, wait till
he does his double jump or Up + B move; when he is coming down, jump up right below him
and hit him right before he lands. This will keep him from hitting you with a
downward move.
- If the hammer appears on the lower level of Samus' board, don't bother
picking it up; you won't be able to avoid the lava if it comes up and your opponents can
easily avoid you by staying on the above platforms.
- Team play: Get your teammate to knock your
opponents near you. Or, have him hold them without throwing them; then, go over and
hit your opponent while he is being held.
Strategies against:
- If you are killed by the hammer and your opponent still has it when you
come back, use your invincibility to your advantage: Get next to him and then throw him.
If you throw your opponent far enough, he will most likely die since he can't double jump
or do his Up + B move. Easy kill, not to mention revenge.
- Mario Brothers stage: Warp back and forth from
one pipe to another and your opponent should never get you. Or, try to launch your
opponent by hitting a POW block.
- The Great Fox: Jump down to the lower level;
if your opponent wants to hit you, he'll have to follow you. When he comes down,
avoid him and jump back up to the top level. Without a double jump or Up + B move,
he won't be able to get back up.
- Yoshi's stage: Jump onto one of the clouds and
stay there (keep jumping up to make sure the cloud doesn't disappear). The guy with
the hammer may well plummet to his death if he tries to come after you.
- Samus' stage: Like the Great Fox. Go to
the lower level until your opponent follows. Then jump up to the above platforms.
Strategies for using:
- There's really only one thing you need to know about this weapon. Press
Right/Left + A when holding it and, if you hit an opponent, no matter what their damage
is, he'll be launched. Get him when he's coming back from a launch or when he's coming
down from a jump.
- Team play: Have your teammate hold your
opponent; then, walk up to them and swing away.
Strategies against:
- Since the biggest threat of the bat is its launching ability, block or
jump out of the way when you see your opponent winding up with it.
- Try to avoid staying close to an opponent who has the bat for long
(especially if there are 3 or 4 people fighting in the same area). This will lessen
the chances he has to use it.
Strategies for using:
- Do not throw this item at an opponent. The reason behind this is
twofold: One, it will not launch your opponent. Secondly, if you throw it an opponent, he
will know where it has landed on the level and have an easier time avoiding it. This is
undesirable because the motion sensor bomb is the smallest item in the game and is
therefore almost undetectable to opponents if they don't know that one has been placed on
the board.
- Place it on a platform to increase the chances your opponent will jump
into it. Or, place it on the edge of a board to get opponents when they are coming
back from a launch.
- Do not place it in the area where people regenerate (after being
killed). You don't want an invincible opponent to deactivate it.
- Team play: Be alert. Make sure your
teammate sees where you've placed it. Launching your teammate with the motion sensor
bomb is obviously a very bad move.
Strategies for using:
- Juggle your opponent by repeatedly shooting them with the gun until
they're too far off to come back. Cheap and not much fun, but it works.
- Throw the gun at your opponent to launch them a very good distance.
