Tell Her

By Sarah

Giles waited impatiently for his tea to brew. He had spent a restless night, tossing and turning before finally he had abandoned the idea of sleep altogether. He was worried, more than worried. It wasn’t just the Mayor, or Faiths betrayal to the dark side, it was Angel. Or more particularly his soul.

It had been sheer luck that the magician the Mayor had contacted for the soul removal ceremony had owed Giles a favor. If it had been one of the others of his circle things might have turned out very differently. Giles pondered how long it would be before someone else attempted to eradicate Angels soul, and just how were they meant to prevent it. His books had provided no answers. As he paced back and forth restlessly he suddenly noticed a letter lying on the mat. It hadn’t been there when he went to bed so it could only have been posted recently. Fearing the worst Giles bent down and began to read..

Giles,

By the time you read this I will be gone. I have come to the conclusion, no
doubt the same one you have, that the longer I stay in Sunnydale the more
likely I will be used as a pawn against Buffy. Sooner or later they will try
and take my soul from me, and I cannot become HIM again...I cannot do that
to Buffy. I am a weakness to her, at a time when she needs her strength the
most. That is why I have left, she needs to be strong for the Ascension and
for the tasks that lie ahead. I have not told her I am leaving, I
cannot ...I guess getting you to tell her is the cowards way out. But there
is another reason for going without saying goodbye...I need her to let
go...I need her to continue with her life..to stop loving me. That is why I
want you to tell her...

" Tell her..
Tell her that it wasn’t love
Say I tried
Say I lied
Tell her I’m unworthy of
What she feels inside
Tell her that you heard me say
What seemed right
Just last night
Simply seemed to fade away in the light of day

Tell her of the countless other lovers whom I’ve tantalized, victimized
Tell her of the many other times I’ve played this heartless game
Just the same
Tell her what I really am
Is just a cold and empty sham
Tell her anything
But not that I love her

Tell her that it wasn’t love
All we shared
All we cared
Make her hate my memory
Make her glad she’s free
Paint me evil
Paint me cruel
Say I broke every rule
Make her feel that she’s a fool
For her loving me

Don’t let her know
Why I must leave her
Why I must go
So far away
For if she knew
How much I love her
No power on earth
Would make her
Stay

Angel

Giles stalked towards his cabinet, grabbing the bottle of 10 year old scotch he’d been saving. Dutch courage ? or just the need to get blind drunk. All he knew was he needed it now. For tomorrow he would give the performance of his life...and break his Slayers heart.
