Nationally Bonded

Alpha Xi Delta was the first sorority founded at ODU.  Just as each of our 120,000 sisters nationwide, the sisters of this chapter uphold the traditions started by our 10 founders April 17, 1893 at Lombard College (now Knox College) in Galesburg, IL.  Our national symbols are our golden quill, the pink rose, colors of double blue and gold and our mascot BetXi Bear (drawn by Jim Henson, whose wife is an Alpha Xi Delta).

Diverse and unique, our sisters have added to the traditions instilled in us by making the zebra the local mascot.  Our belief is that just as every stripe on the zebra is different, so is every sister in our chapter.  But, in the end (or the tail of the zebra), we all come together.  Diverse in the sense that each has her own goals and career plans, we are all involved in many campus activities such as the Panhellenic Council, Student Senate, Student Activities Council, Varsity Athletics, Intramural Sports (1997 Volleyball Champs!), PREVIEW Counselors, Residents Assistants, and many Honor Societies such as Order of Omega, Golden Key and Departmental Societies.

While in college, sisters spend time together working for the benefit of Choose Children (our national philanthropy), at socials with other Greeks, retreats, Formal, sisterhood events or studying. In the Spring of 1998, our chapter started the annual Greek Man of the Year Competition at ODU.  As a philanthropy event, we raised over $400 while giving away $1000 in donated prizes.  Each day as an Alpha Xi Delta ends with a new memory. Memories in a sisterhood that lasts a lifetime.

"People ask why I am in a sorority and I try to explain all the things a sorority is that they cannot see. A sorority is more than letters on a sweatshirt, I say. More than traditional songs, a gold pin, rituals, an obligation or a way of life. A sorority is learning about people. A sorority is giving without expecting in return. A sorority is earning respect from others, as well as for yourself. A sorority will not solve all your problems. But I have made good friends and found confidence there to help me take life one step at a time."
