Part 8: House Divided

Mia got bored waiting for everybody—and more than a little nervous. She hoped the others were okay because now she was feeling uneasy, too. Her armor wasn’t helping. Unlike the Ronin Armors, the Sentinel Armors were more a part of the wearer. Some of their abilities were always present, even when the person was not suited up. Since the attribute of her Armor of Occlusion was truth, Mia could often discern the hidden truth of things. But her armor had been strangely inactive the last few days. She went into the living room to watch some TV and relax. Mia flipped through the channels until something caught her eye. There was a special news bulletin about an attack downtown. People were running and screaming, trying to get away from some flying spirits. The reporter said a woman with long green hair and a silver mask, clad in green and silver armor, led the spirits as they destroyed everything in their path. "Zoe! Anubis! Come here and look at this! We’ve got to get downtown."

Just then Zane pulled into the driveway. Mia was at the door to meet him. "I’m glad you got here so fast. For some strange reason, you beat the others. I’m still waiting for…" As if on cue, Astarte, Gilgamesh, and Trace appeared in a brilliant flash of light. "Good timing. I wish we could all hang around and catch up for a while, but we’ve got trouble." Zoe and Anubis came into the living room. Mia’s skin pricked. She looked at everyone—they seemed fine. But something wasn’t right. There was an ominous undercurrent. Astarte also seemed aware of the chill in the atmosphere. They exchanged questioning glances, but they didn’t have time to sit down and puzzle this out. They had a city to save. "There’s some crazy woman in strange armor running around downtown. She and a bunch of evil, flying spirits are destroying whatever they can. I don’t know if this is related to the trouble Kayura mentioned, but we need to get going. Astarte. Can you teleport all of us all there?"

"With the Jewel of Life now augmenting my powers I can."

"But what about Hecate?"

"Gone forever. A tale for another time. Now everyone stand close." Anubis seemed to hang back. "What’s wrong, Anubis?"

"I should remain here. I…I do not think I will be beneficial to your fight."

"But we rely on your wisdom and power. Without you we would not have known how to defeat Hecate."

"You would have found a way."

"We don’t have time for this." Astarte got ready to teleport.

Zane was also visibly agitated. "Zoe should stay here. Thing’s are really going to get messy downtown. She could get hurt."

Zoe just laughed at him. "Don’t be silly. You’ll need me. I’m going."

"I can handle it! Stay here!"

Astarte was exasperated. "Father Sky, give me strength to deal with such children!" She raised her hand and teleported them all, even as Zoe and Zane continued to argue.
