BIOGRAPHY

On March 22, 1972, Elvis Stojko was born in the town of Newmarket, Ontario, Canada to Steve and Irene Stojko. They named their youngest child Elvis after the American Rock-n-Roll star. Right away it is said, that Irene knew her son was to be something special.

At the age of 3, Elvis saw a figure skater doing a spin on TV. He excitedly pointed at the screen, saying "I wanna' do dat!" The Stojkos made Elvis wait until he was 5 to try skating. From the first time he was on skates, Elvis was hooked, and the rest is history.

Eventually, renowned coach Ellen Burka saw the potential in Elvis' skating and accepted him into the famous Cricket Club. Elvis' technical skills remained above par for his age, conquering the triple axel by age 17. In 1986, Elvis joined Doug Leigh's Mariposa School of Figure Skating, then in Orilla, and eventually it was moved in Barrie. Here, Elvis' skills were refined even further, and in 1990 at the age of 17, he came in second to Kurt Browning and the Canadian Figure Skating Championships. Elvis had burst upon the figure skating world.

That year, he participated in his first World Championship in Halifax, placing 9th. The following year, he again placed 2nd in the Canadian Championships and went to Worlds in Munich. Here, Elvis was placed in the history books by landing the first quad combination in competition, a quad toe- double toe. He placed 6th.

The following season, Elvis continued to compete at the international level, winning gold at Skate Canada. Again, he placed 2nd in the Canadian Championships to Kurt Browning. However, he had qualified for the Olympics in Albertville, France. With an injured foot, Elvis skated two clean performances, placing 7th. However, a month later in Oakland, Elvis won a World bronze medal.

In the 1992-93 Season, Elvis again won Skate Canada, and won silver at the NHK Trophy. Again, he placed 2nd in the Canadian Championships. At Worlds in Prague, Elvis rallied in his long program after a less than perfect short program and won silver.
