TYSON JOHNSON SWORN IN AS SOUTHERN REGIONAL VICE PRESIDENT (updated 13 March 00)
Teamsters President James P. Hoffa has named Tyson Johnson as the new V.P. of the union's Southern Region. Johnson a 33-year member of local 745 in Dallas, Tx. replaces Charles Gardner on The General Executive Board, the union's TOP POLICY MAKING BODY. Gardner is retiring. The Southern Region covers about 90,000 members in 9 States from Florida to Texas. "Tyson has the commitment,abilities and the background to lead The Southern Region into the 21st Century," Hoffa said. Johnson and all general Executive Board Members will stand for election in 2001. Hoffa also has appointed Johnson as Freight Coordinator for the Union's Southern Region. Local 769 has begun contract talks with the Virginia Gardens Police Department. Virginia Gardens is a small municipality in Miami. It is now the 4th police force Local 769 represents. Others include Cocoa Beach, Lauderdale-by-the-sea, and the Miami-Dade School Police.
