POVERTY

Has the term, idea, thought, or mind-set of poverty ever been used in explaining the manner of living or human existence that you are familiar with?  Have you ever been plagued with always being without and never being able to acquire everything that you think you need or want?  Do you consider yourself to be in poverty or financial problems?  Are you honestly and truly in such a situation?

If I suggest that I tell you about poverty, you would probably tell me that I didn't know anything about it or that I've never experienced it.   Or, I could try to talk to you about being in debt way over your head, and this too could sound like I didn't know what I was talking about.  But, let me try anyway.

Poverty is a term used by economists and other professionals to explain the level of a person's monetary wealth and living style.  It is also a term used by manufacturers when wanting to produce the desired emotion and thought of "I want" in a person or culture.   Just because a person does not have all of the things that are advertised as being necessary for one's daily life, does not necessarily mean that a person is living in poverty.   One person's daily necessities may not be those of another.   One person may be very content with a small home, good food and clean clothes while another person may only be content with an 8-room house, 2 cars that work, enough food to throw away after each meal and more clothes than can be worn in a week.   Both may consider themselves as living in poverty if any of these needs can not be met.   Yet, both may be wealthy when looked at with the eyes of someone else.

Before I digress any further and turn this page into a political dissertation on poverty and wealth, let me say that the poor have always been with us in the world.  Today, we may try to place these people in a different category, but it is really still all the same.   People who do not have as much as someone else are always considered poor and living in poverty by those who are setting the standards.   Since the poor have always been with us and will continue to be with us, the topic discussed here may not be any different than that of many others, yet being felt in a manner.

I don't mean to make your problem or situation sound trivial, but many of us seem to handle our situations in basically two different ways.   A person can become so overburdened with worry and concern and lose all interest in living and thereby get deeper into the hole of no return, or a person can put confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ and trust Him to get one through a particular problem or situation.   The same can be said about a person having financial problems or being in debt way beyond the means to repay the debt.

You think you have it bad.   Let me tell you the story of a woman who put her trust in the Lord while going through a tough time in her life.

A prophet of the Lord God Almighty was sent to this one town where a very devout woman lived who had no job, and no welfare payments coming in and only enough food for one meal.   She was unable to get help from any of the shelters and was about to eat this last food with her only child.
Both were prepared to face whatever came next because in all of this, she never gave up her faith and trust in the Lord to provide for her and her child.  As she was about to prepare this last meal, the prophet of the Lord came to visit her.  As they were talking, the prophet asked for a glass of water.
As the woman was going into the kitchen, he asked that she prepare her meal and to bring him the first serving.

The woman explained that she had only enough food for her child and herself and that after this meal would be eaten, there would be no more.  The prophet then told her that the Lord would not let the food run out until there would be an income in the home again.

The Lord did just as He said He would.  The food did not run out until the woman had an income and was able to purchase more food.

Can you believe this of our God and Lord?  Do you believe this of our God and Lord?  Can you trust Him to do the same for you?  Did this woman complain about being poor and without?  She only explained her situation to the prophet.  In the beginning it sounds like she was complaining, but she still did just as the prophet asked.   Did she believe and trust what the Lord promised?   Yes she did!!!!  Did God keep His Word and provide for her needs during her time of distress?   YES HE DID!!!!!!

Are you willing to trust someone else to provide for you?  Would you like to learn about this God who can do such things for us?  Do you think it is possible to have this kind of trust?  Do you think it is possible even for you?  Are you willing to find out?  To find out more about this wonderful God and Lord, go to Who Is Our God.

Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ already?  Are you in a similar situation?   Can you trust the Lord Jesus Christ to keep His promises to you and to provide for you and for your needs while in this situation?  Would you like to try?  Let us know your thoughts and fears by contacting us at the email address given at Contact Us.

Would you like to learn more about this woman and the other trouble she had?   Then read 1 Kings, chapter 17 in the Holy Bible and learn about her problems and how God answered her needs.

Let me tell you another story.  As with the first story, this one can apply to an individual, a group of people, an organization, or a governmental body.   Unlike the story of the poor woman, this story is about two people, one was satisfied with what he had and the other never had enough.

There were two men; one poor, homeless, and alone while the other owned a big fancy house, had a large family, a profitable business, and many employees.  Both lived near each other and knew each other.  The first man put his trust in the Lord God Almighty and thought about God constantly.   He depended upon the Lord for everything.  At the beginning of each day, when he got up, this man thanked the Lord for giving him another day and asked the Lord for protection and provision during the day.  He never complained about his living situation and thanked and praised God for even the little things he'd be given or was to accomplish during the day.   At night, when his day was finished, he'd ask God to forgive him his sins of the day and thanked God for the protection and provisions he had received.  He never went to sleep without asking the Lord to keep him safe during the night.   One night while he was sleeping, some thugs came upon him, robbed him of what he did have and killed him.  The angels came that night and carried him to Heaven to be with the Lord.

The second man lived with his family in their big house and had all of their possessions to amuse themselves with.  Every year, this man's business showed a large profit so that he could continually add to it by buying other businesses.  His corporation got so big that it was the largest in the industry, and in the name of this business, he gave many dollars to help others.  Both, he and his company, were well thought of by everyone.  One night, while driving home from a party, this man had a car accident and was killed.  Everyone went to his funeral and praised him for all that he had done.  But the angels did not come to carry his spirit to heaven.

When his spirit looked up from hell, where it was in torment, it saw the spirit of the poor man in heaven with God and the rich man's spirit asked God to send the poor man's spirit to hell to give him a drink of water.   But God told him that while he was alive, he had had all the good things in life while the poor man had had nothing.   Now, in death, the poor man had his reward and he (the rich man) had his reward.

The spirit of the rich man then asked God to send the spirit of the poor man back to earth to visit his family who were still alive.  Again, God told him (the rich man) that they had all the churches to go to and all the prophets to listen to and all the opportunities to learn all about the ways of the Lord.

What was the difference between these men?  Which one of these are you?  Does this mean that money and material things will automatically cause you to go to hell?  And does this mean that only the poor and homeless will go to heaven?   To find out the answers to these questions and many more that you might have, email us!

MAY THE LORD BLESS AND KEEP YOU!
