Notes for MANLOVE PRATT:

WFT Vol 55 Tree 2748:

Copied from a record written by S.Y. Simmons, Esq. (Sanford Yokum Simmons - Surveyor of Hardy Co., VA / WV - his son was Sammy Simmons) and partly take from the Pratt Family bible by A. G. Hutter, March 18, 1896 - "Manlove Pratt came to his death by shouldering a log, in the town of Moorefield, WVA., in front of Dr. M.D. William's office (near Jim Mullins Hatter shop, believed to be located where the McNeal Hotel is now). Just as he got it on his shoulder a man touched it and he fell and the log lit on the side of his head. He lived but a few moments. He lived but a short distance east of the residence of Hiram Kuykendall."

Hiram Kuykendall married Mary Catherine Pratt - daughter of Isaac Vanmeter Pratt; Isaac was the son of Manlove.

However, according to information - Manlove died in 1821, and Hiram was not born until 1844, unless year of death is incorrect.

Census records show Manlove Pratt with seven family members. He is not shown on any subsequent census records.

Family tradition says the 3 Pratt brothers came from Germany -- Manlove, Isaac and Enoch. Enoch Pratt never married per family tradition.

ALSO from handwritten copy of information sent to me Mary Elaine Law Miller - marylaw@erols.com - as submitted to her by Murphy G. Pratt, Inc.:

"Manlove Pratt came to his death by shouldering a log of black oak timber in front of Jim Mullins Hatter Shop in the Town of Moorefield which house was (sic) more recently used by Doctor M.D. Williams, served as his office and after his death by his son Doctor M.D. Williams Jr. (Doggy).

According to a story told in West Virginia -- August 1964, a man by the name of Klein

(sp?) was believed to be responsible for the deaths of Isaac Pratt and Seymour

Baldwin. When a man by the name of Klein and his family moved into the area

many years later, the Pratts living nearby made his life so miserable that he and

his family moved in three days. The older Pratt members living in that area still

have no use for the Kleins. Received from Sandra Evans, 506 N. Main St.,

Moorefield, WV.

Another account of Isaac V. Pratt's death sent by Mrs. Leona Rumer Zinn, source unknown,

see letter #155: "Isaac VanMeter Pratt was murdered in time of the late war on the

west side of Walker's Ridge in what is now Grant Co., WV., on a private path leading

from the main road, leading to Henry Hawks, and the road crossing Walker's Ridge

to Isaac Groves on the 16th day of October 1864. Received from Sandra Evans,

506 N. Main St., Moorefield, WV 26836.

Isaac VanMeter Pratt, their son, (10/30/1802-10/16/1864), married Rachael Jones

(4/10/1816-3/17/1886), daughter of John and Martha Jones. Isaac was killed along

with Seymour Baldwin on Walker Ridge while in pursuit of his horse by some

roughs who had formed themselves into a company during the War Between the

States. Their children were Sarah Jane, James, Ann Elizabeth, John, Mary Catharine,

Martha Susan, Job Hutton, Caroline Amanda, Dorothy Eliza, Jacob, Florence

Rebecca, Isaac Hutton, Margaret Frances, and Nancy Alice.

Note*: a child by the name of Virginia was shown on the 1850 Census. No record is made of

her by S.Y. Simmons on A.G. Hutter, but it seems likely that the census was correct

since the time interval between children was usually no more than two years.

Received from Sandra Evans, 506 N. Main St., Moorefield, WV. 26836.

On the Mineral Co., marriages list for 1895 - Jemima C. Rumer is listed as age 21, and Thomas Markley is listed as age 26.

Thomas Markley's headstone lists him as dying in 1901. The next child Jeminah had, called Charlie Harry claims his last name is Ewing. All of the children were raised with the name of Markley. It is not sure whether Jeminah remarried or stayed a widow.

Eleanor, daughter of Ruby Opal Markley Ewing - a daughter of Jemima C. / Jeminah Rumer Markley - said she specifically remembered when Jeminah died. It was on Thanksgiving and Eleanor was broken hearted because Jeminah was supposed to bring her a comb and brush when she came to visit. She said Jeminah died of stomach cancer.

All of the information on the descendants of Jemima C. Rumer was submitted by Shannon Ritzke, HCR1, box 468, Saylorsburg, PA 18353.
