J OHN4 BRUCE (JOHN3, JAMES2, PATRICK1) was born 1690 in Kinnaird, Scotland, and died 1752 in Albermarle Co., VA. He married MARGARET FRAZER, daughter of ELSPETT WOOD and ? FRAZER. She was born Abt. 1689 in Warse Canisbay, Caithness, Scotland, and died Unknown.Notes for J OHN BRUCE:Information from Ancestory.com submitted by Thomas G. Untiedt: The following is an excerpt from the paper "Bruce: Historical Papers #2" by Michael V. Stambach-Bruce, ORB, 1991, (who I think is now deceased). "It is increasingly apparent that the Bruces of Dark Run are descended from the 17th century Bruce family of the Northern Neck of Virginia. My own recent discovery has proven a connection and probable descent of the Elijah Bruce of Culpeper Co., from the family of Henry Bruce, son of William Bruce, d. before 14 Dec. 1683." "Of the numerous lines descending from the earlier Bruce families of the Northern Neck there is one in particular which, in my opinion, is the best candidate for identification as the progenitor of the later Bruce families of Orange, Culpeper, Albemarle, and other counties. That is JOHN BRUCE, son of Henry Bruce. This John Bruce may have been the same who was erroneously identified by Philip Alexander Bruce as the childless son of GEORGE BRUCE, 1650-1715." "It seems likely that JOHN BRUCE of Dark Run married at least twice, MARGARET FRAZIER being his second or later wife. Although no direct evidence has been found that would allow us to determine whether or not David and GEORGE BRUCE were sons or brothers of JOHN BRUCE of Dark Run, the evidence we do have clearly indicates a close relationship. The fact that John received two large patents in 1735, with no record of David or George having received any patents but having lived with or adjacent to John of Dark Run, seems to point to their dependency on John of Dark Run." "We now know that John of Dark Run was appointed by the Court of Hanover Co., Va. to act as the administrator of the estate of Morris (Maurice) Roberts by 1734. This is found in the early Orange Co. records. Other records prove that JOHN BRUCE was a resident of Caroline Co. prior to his migration to Orange Co. We can draw from the fact that a number of the Northern Neck families left Richmond and Westmoreland Cos. at early dates and settled in Caroline Co., later migrating to Orange Co." "Of special interest is the appearance of an entirely "new" JOHN BRUCE who, it appears, may have resided or at least owned property in Spotsylvania Co., Va. This John died before 1740. Was THIS the childless son of GEORGE BRUCE, 1650-1715? This appearance also presents a minor problem. It is obvious from this new research that some or all of the later Dark Run set had lived at Spotsylvania Co. The question is raised, "How do we know whether or not records of JOHN BRUCE during the period of 1733-1740 belong to the deceased John (by 1740) or the JOHN BRUCE of Dark Run who lived into the 1750's at Augusta Co.?" A close examination of these records may reveal that the pre-1740 records can be linked to the post 1740 records by common association, etc." "Another possibility remains; that is, was the earlier JOHN BRUCE of Spotsylvania Co. a brother of Henry Bruce of Richmond Co., Va.?" "The land at Dark Run, originally in Orange Co., later fell into Culpeper and eventually fell into Madison Co., Va. At some point later generations of this Bruce family, as well as members of the QUINN, Ballard, and Watts (all intermarried) families removed to adjacent Albemarle Co., Va. where they maintained close geographic relationships." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Stambach-Bruce also has the following re this John Bruce: "John Bruce, Planter & Merchant b. ca 1690 liv. at Caroline Co., VA., 1732 two patents at Dark Run, Orange Co., VA later liv. at Augusta Co., VA = (?1) ______________? = (2) Margaret Frazier" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mr. Stambach-Bruce was apparently convinced that John Bruce of Dark Run was married twice, Margaret Frazier being his second wife. I have not found any evidence to support this but if true Margaret Frazier is probably not the mother of all his children, possibly not any of them. His Aunt Jet and Uncle Dave, who were sister and brother to William Henry Harrison Price, raised Elbert. Neither Dave nor his sister, Jet, ever married. They lived in a house in Rye Hollow, VA on land, which was later owned by and referred to as the Odell Hudson property. I never saw the house, because it had burned years earlier, but the chimney continued to stand in the middle of a vegetable garden. I recall seeing the chimney in the late 1930~s and early 1940's.

She was particular and meticulous. She was a good cook and an excellent seamtress. She was not a kind person. She could be harsh. She was very pretty. She didn't encourage education. She was possessive of her children. Rumor had it that she caused the breakup of James William Price and Virginia Walters.
